Arrived at this quaint little theatre at around 725 and made our way to our seats. I was with my old Quo mate Gary, we only ever see each other for Quo related stuff.
Looked the stage, two victorian chairs, a table in the middle with a lamp on it. A cup of, what we discovered later, hot water and bookshelves either side with the book on it.
Mick Wall came on, told us no recording, videos etc and to use the box at the front for any questions you may have, place them there during the intermission for part 2.
Francis walked on, looked very well and appeared relaxed from the off. Part 1 was a mix of him playing, video and life story anecdotes from the book (Rossi ice cream, meeting Rick, Alan's Mum, management, The Sun Newspaper). He explained his introduction to the shuffle, how he nicked POMM from Hey Joe, retuning a guitar, how it was mixed etc, so somewhat interesting to those not in the know, so he played POMM, then Spinning Wheel Blues and Chair.
The 70's were skipped over, then it started to go a little strange, him playing a shuffle and him encouraging the audience to join in, to the likes of 'the jig', which is fine in a sweaty hot gig, but not sat down in an old Theatre which judging by the audience, was mainly from an old folks home. Then it went straight to Live Aid, yawn. End of Part 1 which lasted 40mins.
Part 2, some more video, talked about doing the promo stuff, ie Toby Jugs, OBE, Madame Tussauds then the dreaded Coronation Street, when the evening took a turn for the worse, he picked up the guitar, strummed and hummed the theme tune, yes, there was audience participation. Kill me now i thought.
He then spoke about Rick and his passing. During this part, someone in the audience keeled over (hope he has recovered), medics called etc, which was wierd as Francis was talking about heart attacks etc.
We then got to the (what i thought) was the juicy part of the evening, the Q&A, what a sack of shit.
"How many waistcoats do you own"
"Where are you staying tonight, so i can pick up my mother later"
"Is the book any good"
I cannot recall the other two questions, and that was it.. part 2 was about 50mins which should have been 40.
The evening finished with him signing the book and CD.
Yes, he was humorous (but he didnt have Rick to bounce off, he had Mick Wall), it was pleasing to hear him talk fondly about 'Him and I' and he did look a little pained when he spoke about his 'death' in Turkey. Was it worth £28, not really. Did i learn anything ?, No.
Was his singing any good, Yes. Should you go, not really, unless you think Francis is God and love everything he does.
