I was watching the documentary on the Everly Bros earlier, and it got to the bit where Dave Edmunds was demonstrating how Phil (I think) played the intro to Wake Up Little Susie, all downbeats, very rocky, it was seen as standout at the time. And I thought "Rick". I know they were all influenced by the Everlys, but apart from that it seemed to me a very Rickish thing, to get the max out of the guitar when it needed to rock.
Later it said that they lost their status after 1963 when the Beatles and the Stones and many other bands came along and took over the world, but they were all influenced by the Everlys and their harmonies and sound. The Evs didn't vanish (just yet), I knew about them as a young fan, but mainly because the Beatles were influenced, and I knew that, but once you heard them you knew they were a force in their own right. (Like Buddy Holly and Bo Diddley, different sounds but very influential to the pop boom after 1962).
I still like to hear them now.
And I was missing the harmonies on stage when Rick and Francis were not doing them, or doing less of them. It mattered!

Can't say I've heard much of the Evs, despite Quo saying they were a big influence.. maybe I should !!

I've learned about them by osmosis. I know the songs though I didn't make a conscious effort to follow them.
Listening to his again, now I rather enjoy it. And I can see how they influenced both Francis and Rick.
Talking of Dave Edmunds, reminds me of an early interview Francis did when he talks about his love of Dave Edmunds. And how he preferred his version of Girl Talk to the Elvis Costello hit.

Used to have an interview on tape from the early 1980s with DJ Andy Peebles talking with Francis Rossi on Radio One. A 'My Top Ten' type of show.
No longer have the tape. It probably did a Mission Impossible self-destruction! Possibly the same interview that curiousgirl has mentioned?... as one of Rossi's choices had been Dave Edmunds 'Girl Talk'.
He was also talking about the virtues of the Everlys and how, for him, some songs don't have to be Heavy Metal riffing to still hit you between the eyes, as such. He chose their 'When Will I Be Loved' to demonstrate this point. Wasn't sure about that idea at the time but I now kind of get what he was saying. Live on stage versions seem to have shifted up a few gears compared to the more laid back track recorded in the early 60s.
Have a vague memory of hearing their 'Let It Be Me' on our turnable at home when I was very young.
I did see the The Everly Brothers on stage at The Lakeside Country Club in Frimley Green. Now home to the Darts and possibly Everlys tribute acts!
No idea how I came to get tickets, possibly complimentary as it may have been a warm-up gig for a major tour and not widely advertised. I can't find anything online to corroborate that it actually happened and what year etc. The gig that never was! Doubt it was the '83 reunion and more likely to be 1991. Should remember shouldn't I?!
Fairly sure Chas and Dave opened proceedings, then Duanne Eddy took to the stage and finally The Everlys with Albert Lee on guitar. They were in fine voice.
In the 70s and 80s, the Lakeside club did attract the big names in the entertainment industry.

I also loved the harmonies Quo used to do and missed hearing them live. The magic of Quo was in the merging of all their influences from different styles and if The Everly Brothers were part of those influences I will be forever grateful!

I had a ticket to see them in 1983 but for some reason thought the was a different day of the week than what it actually was. I was in a wine bar on Union Terrace with my cousin when she said something and I said it can't be because I going to see The Everly Brothers on xxxday and that's the XXth she was mad at me and said that if I hadn't wanted to go the previous night then she would have love to go. It was the mid 90s before I had another opportunity to see them, at the Usher Hall, they were getting on by then but great show and lovely harmonies. Only down bit was their "warm" up was a "comedian" have never heard anything so unfunny.

Thanks Charles that might have helped had the concert not taken place the day before ps we went to that wine after the gym because they did the most wonderful cauliflower and cheese - the wine, on the odd occasion I had a glass was OK - I usually had hot chocolate
