Word from former bandmate Melvyn Gale is that former ELO Cellist Hugh McDowell has died at 65.

Terribly sad news, such a nice guy and so talented. Did your paths cross mate? That string section was such an integral part of that early ELO sound.

Such news indeed. RIP to Hugh McDowell. And yes, the strings are so key to the ELO sound.

ELO brought the cello sound into rock & roll, it's a pity more bands didn't follow. RIP.

Yes, I'm a huge ELO fan and met them a lot back in the 70s, Cozy was a big friend of Bev and I got to know them that way, stayed in touch with them sporadically over the years. Such a shame that he and Kelly have gone and Richard is so ill, ELO was always the sum of its parts back then, on record and live, not just a Jeff Lynne project.

Such a shame that he and Kelly have gone and Richard is so ill, ELO was always the sum of its parts back then, on record and live, not just a Jeff Lynne project. Did you ever read Bev's book? www.dropbox.com/s/d7dk09mro193z8j/Bev%20Bevan%20-%20The%20Elo%20Story.pdf?dl=1"Hughie is a flamboyant extrovert, and a real liability when he's drunk". Proper rock star cellist. Yep, Kelly was great, saw him many times with ELO II and The Orchestra, and met him once, very briefly before a gig. When you listen to those records you can hear them all, and yes, it made a difference. Kelly's voice blended so well with Jeff, compared to his predecessor Mike de Albuquerque who had a rougher edge vocally. I knew Richard was ill with him missing all the recent gigs, plus the Showdown fan list discussions. Assume it's pretty serious.
