Hi folks, I've just joined this board, so hello and happy new year! I was a member of a previous boards.net one but it randomly disappeared off the tinterweb! Anyway, over the festive period I've dug out the DVDs and been watching the Wembley (88 I think) and Butlins gig's. They aren't the best quality but I have to say I forgot how good Rossi's guitar sounded back then - unfortunately I'm not old enough to remember seeing them back then but comparing it to these days and mid 90s it's fantastic. It's my favourite out of all his sounds over the decades. What actually happened to his sound after this period? I know the lace sensors contributed to it but I don't think they are solely to blame, I've got lace sensors in a guitar and they don't ruin the sound that much! It seems to me there was a bit of fiddling with amp/gp-8 settings too. Late 80s / early 90s there's quite a lot of overdrive and a lot of treble. I also see he seemed to use what looks like a Marshall 'guv'nor' peddle along side the GP-8. Anyone know if this was permanently on to overdrive the amp more or was this kicked in and out to boost the overdrive of the gp-8?

The Lace Sensor pickups went in in 1991 just before the RTYD event. When he went to the Lace Sensors I think his main setting was to have the Bridge and Middle pickups active. Going from 2 pickups to 3 will change a guitar sound. Also the Bridge pickup of a Strat sounds nothing like a Bridge pickup of a Tele. You can really tell the Difference between these two vids a year apart.

Agree, it is a very different sound between those two videos, however if you listen to the drive and overdrive of the amp, it's very similar. You can tell that the only difference in sound between those two videos is the different pickups. Later 90s and into the 00s when the gp-8 was still being used, the sound changed drastically...for the worse!

Welcome Runaway87! And thanks Lord F for the vids! Poor mans Santana set-up sadly. Too much muffled tones through a cheap set-up... He is a genious that has gone astray, still showing, sometimes, but the mainstream output is dull and uninspired imo.
