Apart from this footage which shows Rick and Francis. Does any footage exist of them playing some songs that night? Did they perform that night or did they just show up for the end of the gig.

You can check out the full concert here:
Looking at some of the comments on the Youtube page, it looks like it was just Rossi & Parfitt as part of the “All Star Band” for the last few tracks.

Heard through the grapevine that FR and RP would be on the bill. Decided to beetle along to the concert. Unfortunately they only appeared in the finale. Had never seen such a gathering of rock/pop luminaries at one concert.
Plenty of well known faces in the audience apart from Charles and Diana... remember seeing Billy Connolly and Pam S driving out of the gig in their Range Rover and some other celebs in convoy. Decided to sneak into the backstage compound and came face to face with Clapton and his female companion...and his guitar case if I remember correctly and he put that in the boot of his car.
Francis was embarrassed at the time about Rick's antics of pushing himself to the front though think he now feels differently about it as most of those on stage were trying to get noticed.

Live Aid?.... good point, well made.
I was referring to concerts that one had attended!
One's enduring memory is of Dire Straits performing 'Money For Nothing' and Sting walking on to contribute his vocals to the song. Performed like a man possessed and howling a bit!
Their bassist John Illsley seemed to be getting on well with FR later on. Francis did a bit of recording with Dire Straits, didn't he?

Midge Ure had his work cut out being the musical director for the concert. Supergroups don't always gel at the right moment and can sometimes get a bit messy, though the '86 'Money For Nothing' line-up worked out well.
Watched a programme recently with Knopfler on acoustic guitar. He played a variety of tunes. He started to play 'Money For Nothing' but after a few bars he suddenly stopped playing... think it was either because it wasn't working or more likely that he couldn't find the enthusiasm to play it again for the millionth time.

In the circumstances, probably quite fortunate to get to hear him play Sultans again.
