There will be some happy campers around as Coles has dropped the Down Down campaign in Australia and will be launching a new ad campaign tonight. www.smh.com.au/business/companies/down-down-but-not-out-coles-thinks-it-s-onto-a-good-thing-with-new-ads-20180306-p4z31b.htmlWhatever you think of the campaign it was an unprecedented success. The "Down Down" tune has been used by Coles for nearly 8 years and nearly every kid in Australia now knows it. Status Quo became involved in 2012, so nearly 6 years have passed since: It has been reported in financial journals that the Status Quo conglomerate has received revenue in the vicinity of 8 figures (AUD) since the original campaign began (not all in Rossi's pocket mind you!) It has also been deemed one of the Top 5 Australian ad campaigns in history but has now run its course.

Ask any kid in Oz who THAT Down Down band was and you’d be returned with a blank look and shrug as not at any time over those 8 years did the Status Quo name appear. It was good business for both Coles and Quo though.

I remember reading that one of the CEO for coles had a Quo cd left in his car from his daughter left behind. That's how they come up with the idea, another missed Quo success not putting their name on the ads. I even seen kids at a railway platform singing it one time.

It does seem like a lot. OTOH, it's been over a span of 6 years, and involved personal filming from the band, not just the use of the track. And Coles profits were "down down" in August 2017 to AU$ 1.6 BILLION - so they are not short of a dollar or two. That's about £ sterling 1million a year, just under, for the band.

Doesn't matter how much they make. They still waste it anyway.

The horrid truth (it seems to me) is that High Artists only get to think of themselves like that if they only appeal to small inward-looking cliques who are mainly concerned about how much smarter they are than the rest of the plebs who buy (or don't buy) their papers ... as soon as the honoured artists start dealing with the "general public" they discover there are a lot of other views out there ... and ... hey! Quite a lot of those new views actually like them! The people who are really in agony are the cliquies who have been left behind ... The true avant garde post modern artist, of course, has to be really careful ... if they get too popular with the common herd, it brings the actual price tickets on their works down, potentially with disasterous consequences. It's tough when you have to be dead in order to be expensive AND popular.
