In ‘rock’ music history, is there anything better than Rick Wakeman’s piano on Life on Mars.

Jon Lord by a mile. Although there are so many others too, not all stars but often influential :- Rick Wright, Tony Banks, Keith Emerson, Rick Wakeman, Peter Bardens, Hugh McKenna, Thijs van Leer, Kerry Minnear, Geraint Watkins, Paul Carrack, Bob Andrews, Gary Brooker, Ian McLagan, Benmont Tench ...... You might get cast into the wilderness by certain people for mentioning Geraint Watkins on this board

This night it suddenly dawned on me we'd forgotten to mention Ken! A genius, but a difficult man. (Sounds familiar?) For 'July Morning' alone he should have made top five. And 'Tales'! 'Easy Livin', The Wizard', 'The Magician's Birthday', 'The Park', 'Come Away, Melinda'... Shit, he's just made top three.

Jon Lord because I always think of him as the archwtypal rock keyboardist you can actually listen to, but special mention for Keith Emerson please, he was not only good, he practically started classic crossover progressive music.
PS and he stuck knives in the back of his Hammond.

When Coverdale joined Deep Purple he was told by Jon Lord in no uncertain terms that there was room for only one moustache in the band, Coverdale promptly shaved his off.

Completely missed this thread at the time, so here's my tuppence worth! Steve Walsh - Kansas He sings 'impossible' melodies and plays demonic keys too... try this, for the latter...

The guy out of Procul Harem deserves a mention in that list. Even if just for ‘ Whiter Shade of Pale ‘ Think it’s Gary Brooker ?
