1. After MK84 Alan was not happy with Quarry. Alan received not enough income.
2. Colin said that Phonogram was responsible for it and proposed an audit, to research if they were paying enough royalities.
He even proposed a worse deal with Andy and Pete, a fix amount 15.000 GBP for each record and no longer a percentage.
Alan wanted to get off from the Phonogram deal and Quarry. They were the bad guys.
3. Francis and Rick didn't want to come over to Australia to record another album Alan did not even wanted to come over to the UK to record another album.
4. Despite the business part their were also personal differences in the relationship between Francis and Alan. But that could be overhelmed. They were still friends.
5. The In the Army recordings started on 16.09.1985
6. Phonogram denied it to Alan but Alan knew that studio time was booked. He knew it from several sources.
7. In the end, the relationship between Quarry and Alan was very agressive. They were no longer on speeking terms. They were upset that Alan knew too much about financial issues.
A honest and fair conclusion is that Phonogram and Quarry pushed and recomended Francis to sack Alan. Francis at that time was serious under influence, a puppet on a string.
Alan was the only person at that time who knew that they were ripped off by Phonogram and Quarry and they were for him a pain in the arse. They asked him to resign and to sell his shares in several companies : Quo Entertainments LTD and Classic Moore Ltd. Also John was still shareholder in Classic Moore Limited.
Alan has always tried to find out what was missing, they finally settled an agreement around 2008/2009. Two year later the FF was back together, Shepperton studios.

Yet, still certain people will continue to believe that the record company were right and there was nothing dubious about the courts awarding the naming rights to Rossi and Parfitt. Much like today where the relationship and goings-on between two parties is seen to be entirely above board.

The events of 84/85 wasn't just a personality clash or band politics:
There was genuine skullduggery as well.

They don't say how they got hold of these faxes. But the gist of this matches what I heard in connection with the court case. The friction was between Alan and Quarry (Alan Crux was mentioned, but I think this is just because he was the finance director, or such). Francis didn't like it or want to get involved. (As we know a few years later, he was admitting that they had found out there was a financial problem.)
There also appears to have been an issue that Alan particularly wanted to "try again" on the USA, even suggesting that they move the operation there. This is not something Francis wanted, having gone off the USA in a big way earlier, mostly for reasons of scale.
I've never heard that Alan was sacked. It seems to be a matter of record that Alan and Rick approached the record company, after Francis said he was quitting, and offered them a Quo based on Alan and Rick. The record company said no, there were recording obligations, and they would not accept this without Francis. As he was the main PUBLIC figure, this made perfect sense.
Alan wasn't sacked, IIUR. Francis genuinely wanted out, but couldn't get out, but refused to work with Alan. In effect the band came apart, then moved sideways to somewhere Alan wasn't, and re-appeared. I have a faint recall of at least a couple of other bands I knew about doing something similar in the 70s.

It was said that the "person who just wanted to help" was the one sitting by the messaging machine (I forget now what they were called but we had one for a short time" when messages intended for Alan in Australia mysteriously just didn't get there. |

Mrs F, I need to re:watch the Hello Quo doc which I've now got a copy of but I'm sure that this was the big reveal in the film. Official letter was sent to Alan and signed by Francis sacking him from the band. I'll update to confirm when I can. |

Yesterday we had a great evening. When two collectors on the continent come together to dig in the early recordings of Quo .. then there is something magic.
We were digging in the first years Spectres years and even before.
For the first time I was also privileged to read all the private letters, faxes between Francis, Rick and Alan in 1984 / 85 /86.
Very very interesting
Even the letter in which Francis sacked Alan, was a surprise. We know now the reasons why.

The whole band was manipulated & shafted big time. It would have been harder to do, of course, if the four of them, & Bob, had stuck together to the exclusion of everybody else - but drugs, egos, etc......

People seem to forget if Rossi/Frost had been a success and they actually released an album instead of a couple of singles that went no where. Francis wouldn't have needed to go back.
Alan was knived by Francis and Rick. But in life sometimes you have to.
But for me they killed the band and created a brand.

I sincerely hope - now that the FF working together is back to being a pipe dream - that Alan finishes his autobiography. I think it could be one hell of a read.

I'd love to hear every member of the band from around this period to be truthful about what happened... Obviously Rossi won't cause he's a puppet of Porter but no documentary has ever gone deep on the downfall of Quo around '80-'86 and now with these Faxes that came from Alan himself are around and looking to come into public domain (even the letter from Francis sacking Alan). Guess we'll have to see what the future brings.
