I just want to know what the very strange stare Francis was giving Alan during 'Proposing on the EOTR video was about. There's a few moments during the 'encore' where he's clearly off his face so i can understand that blighting the whole performance for him and not wanting a re-release of it.

I don't think Naughty Girl was the most obvious choice of comeback single either, although it was released not long after as Dreamin. I know its easy looking back now armed with certain knowledge, but I was more referring to how I felt at the time, trying to wade my way through all the mass of contractions. As a fan it was perplexing trying to work out what Francis wanted out of the break from touring at the time, especially releasing out of the blue two semi solo singles. There was no easy path to follow, or direction. I suppose it was the same for all concerned themselves, but why did Francis feel the need to have Frost prop him up. I can only assume he missed Rick beside him, but I think the single Modern Romance would have been huge had Francis stood tall on his own. I know lots of people that adores that song, mostly Mothers of my mates at the time, I think it was Marguerita Time all over again. But it just wasn't managed or promoted correctly. I just feel I got pretty grim memories of that period 1985 trying to establish exactly what was going on, and if we were ever going to have a proper Quo again. I still had on the one hand The End Of The Road band blasting in one ear, and before we knew it Modern Romance playing on my turntable. It really was a strange place to be in as a fan. I suppose it would have been clear to some fans more than others. I know on one of the German dates of the End Of The Road tour, Hannover 24th April to be specific, Francis and Alan got into an argument on stage and were immensely pissed off with one another - so I've read / heard from several fans in attendance Ive never heard of that argument in Hannover. The thing is we didn't have the Internet in those days, and information about anything current was rare to say the least. We just had the brave faces to look at, and that was that.

I loved Quo but by the time of the mid-80's, they were no longer the be all and end all they were in my teens a decade earlier. Still no.1 in my eyes, where they've remained, but, looking back, I think I'd just grown up. My musical tastes had broadened, although not to the extent of liking Modern Romance , and I had other interests outside listening to music in my bedroom every night So the band announcement that they were 'not touring' didn't really affect me that greatly. We were all unaware at the time of the frictions and, frankly, downright war within the band. These have only come to light in retrospect. And only in bits and pieces. But, most importantly, the music had begun to suffer with Francis wanting to go one way and Alan another and Back To Back in particular ended up just being a mish mash of poor stuff. In fact, neither one thing nor the other. Rick had never contributed enough to prevent that from happening. I disagree that Modern Romance would have been huge had it just been Francis. The song was a bit limp and the video was awful. Everything about it was out of sync with the UK in the 80's, especially the music. Best thing that happened all round was it flopping really.

I was gutted that they announced the end of touring because it was during that tour was my first time of seeing them. I was already a big fan for many years, but never really old enough to go to gigs, so finally seeing them live was like having all my birthdays and Christmases come at once. So as you can imagine this was disastrous times for me. But I took some comfort from what Francis announced that we will be a band as normal, just not touring. And even the news put out there was that Quo will be still recording music, just not touring. So it was confusing for me when I discovered one day during a visit to my local record store, the guy who ran it said, hey have you got the new Francis Rossi single? I'm like, what you on about, surely he meant a new Quo single, but then brought out Modern Romance, and it wasn't really a solo single, it was billed as Rossi/Frost. I remember thinking how the heck does this stand a chance at being a hit under that banner, no one knows who Rossi/Frost is, but obviously I bought it. Personally I remember prefering the b side I wonder why, it sounded more Quoish, but then a while later the guy was presenting me with Jealousy, same thing happened where I preferred the b side. Remember we didn't have the Internet then so any info was like rockin horse doo doo, but I remember thinking what the heck is actually going on, here I was expecting new Quo material, but we we're getting Rossi/Frost records. Can you imagine what it would be like had Flying Debris did get released? It would have just added fuel to my fire of confusion in my head. Nothing was happening as expected, so these were very upsetting times for a 15 year old. A year on we had the Army album and well, you know the rest.... 👀
