I knew Alan had written these with a guy from the Pirates, I hadn't realised that band also recorded and released the songs in the same year as Quo did (77 and 79)
Not sure who recorded first?
Note the Pirates artwork - using the cross guitar design over ten years before Quo did

I like The Pirates versions, possibly due to having seen them live a couple of times late '70s / early '80s when You Don't Own Me featured in their set

For me, Quo's versions are better. Probably in the sense that they are more polished. Not really the sort of thing you'd have said about Quo in the 70's.
I've had these tracks in my collection for years but I've rarely listened to them. Maybe even only the once.
Talking of other recordings of Quo songs, this was recorded and released before it appeared on Back To Back. Again, for me, Quo's version is better but only in the sense that neither are that great.

Some great gigs there, wish I could have got to more of them. |

Never heard of the pirates, might give them a look up. Do just ever so slightly prefer the quo versions, only just though.

Originally Johnny Kidd & the Pirates, big hit: Shakin' All Over & also Please Don't Touch [later covered by the Motorhead & Girlschool combo HeadGirl], before splitting, breaking up & reforming. Huge no. of members over the years, but the classic post Kidd line up was centred around the guitar playing of Mick Green who wrote a few songs with Alan Lancaster over the years. Mick has played guitar with everybody from Paul McCartney to Van Morrison & beyond. |

If I remember rightly, Mick Green was a member of Shanghai when they supported Quo on the Blue For You tour. As was Pete Kircher I think.
That's maybe how Alan and Mick Green met. Don't actually know though.

Could well be, although Mick Green was around for so long & played with so many people over the years that their paths may well have crossed a few times even before the days of Shanghai |

Wish Quo had done Hard Ride like the pirates version as it could have got on an album. Quo’s version sounds a semi demo which wasn’t quite finished. You don’t own me is not much different in comparison..

I did love The Pirates, and whilst their versions are different, they are both as valid, and I prefer their version of You Don't Own Me, got some grit in it.
As for the Lew Lewis version of Win or Lose, absolutely bloody marvellous, pishes all over the Quo verion from a great height.
What a great album Save The Wail was, as for Back To Back, the album that should have never been released.
