Did they ever perform this anywhere on tv whilst promoting the Fourth Chord album?
I don’t recall seeing any playback performances.
Prior to the album’s release they didn’t play it during their summer shows either, which was a missed opportunity to advertise the fact they had a new album coming out,

I don't think they did perform it on TV, I think they were interviewed on TV and showed a clip of the video only.

I remember this one, didn't catch it live myself, I was working, but think my dad caught on the day from memory, not sure if there was any others.
Thought it was a great track at the time, still do, but think it could be rested live for a bit.

There wasn’t much physical live performance musical promotion for this album apart from the band going on This morning playing “Pennsylvannia blues tonight” a few months later. “Beginning of the end” didn’t chart high enough to be invited on Top of the pops and things like Jonathan ross or Jools holland were seen a bit above them at the time…

There wasn’t much physical live performance musical promotion for this album apart from the band going on This morning playing “Pennsylvannia blues tonight” a few months later. “Beginning of the end” didn’t chart high enough to be invited on Top of the pops and things like Jonathan ross or Jools holland were seen a bit above them at the time… I remember thinking after seeing Quo play Pennsylvannia Blues, so perhaps this is the new single, but sadly it wasn't. I really liked Pennsylvannia blues, much better than Beginning of the end. As I've mentioned in other threads, for me as a fan it seems post roughly 1988 it started to be a confusing time. Too many songs we're used in TV performances that didn't get released as singles. I remember seeing Address Book on a TV show and thinking, ok so this must be the next single, but nothing came of it. And this frustrating trend seemed to carry on pretty much up until the current time, where singles get released with zero promotion, yet Quo have performed album tracks with no apparent intention of them being singles. I think this trend started in 1988 when I seen Cross that bridge on some foreign TV program, but it was never a single. I can't ever remember Quo performing songs on TV that we're not singles before 1988. I could be wrong but they seemed to have a tighter quality control pre 1988, and it was a lot less confusing being a fan. I'm one of those fans that always rushed out and bought a new single, I wanted to be that vital part of helping it into the charts, and if possible buy all the formats. Thats why I was devestated when the physical single died out. Especially as I knew it would mean Quo could no longer have hit singles, this was and still is a very low point for me. |

I stand corrected, I forgot about those. But to be fair I never seen those performances until in recent years on youtube or something like that. I didn't see them at the time of broadcast. So not a trend that started post 88 after all. Just something I noticed personally I guess as I started earning my own money and buying the records myself instead of giving my Mum a list lol. I wasn't in full time employment until 86, so my record collection and involvement in buying my own records greatly increased post 86. |

In one or two territories it out performed RAOTW.

The term 'single' was almost gone by the time Beginning of the End came out. It's top 'songs' these days, certainly on iTunes. And they go up to 200!  Many of us bemoan the absence of the single, including me, but it's just the way things have panned out. As soon as you could buy or stream a specific track individually from any album, the single's days were numbered. And the savings on physical production must have been very attractive to music companies. The first Quo track I can recall not coming out in a physical format (not officially that is; I appreciate promo CD's pitch up all over the place coz I've got a few) was Rock 'n' Roll 'n' You. It's just an opinion but the absence of the single and consequently the lack of variety in the top 'songs' has resulted in modern music becoming a bit stagnant. But, to be fair, no less popular for it. |

I've actually got the Rockers Rollin' single. Yeah I know it was a single in Europe, I misinterpreted the comment regarding songs performed on TV, I thought it meant songs performed that weren't UK singles. Doh! No actually you're quite right. It was my oversight to say it was post 88 period that did that. I think in my defence I only got involved in the politics of single releases when I started to earn my own money, which was to be precise April 1986 when I became in full time employment. So I took the natural progression of buying my own records, and getting more involved of new releases instead of giving my parents, mostly Mum a list of singles I probably heard on the radio or seen on Top of the pops, it's how it all worked back then. Great days in my opinion. But if I can explain as a fan becomming a more serious post 86 from my perspective I found it odd how a band could pluck a track from an album and expose it on TV to a certain degree which led me to think the song must be the new upcoming single. So used to get all excited and head to my local record store asking about the song I seen on TV, but they very often had to tell me we can't see anything about it. And in pre Internet days which they were it was difficult to find anything out. I think I was a bit obsessive, but either way I felt the band were sending out the wrong signals very often, or maybe it was management, but there were times I was confused as to what was going to be a single and what wasn't. Especially as I wanted to be in that shop the minute it was released. In hindsight I was a bit mad, but I didn't have any hobbies, so I invested all my efforts in being a staunch Quo fan. I think if I managed a band I would get everyone to agree on a single and give it maximum exposure and promotion, instead of doing an half baked idea of exposing a song which never had an intention of being a single, that to me seems like a waste of money and exposure. That said looking back Quo have had an amazing run of successful hit singles, so who am I to complain? I just felt at the time, it could have been even greater if tighter rules were in place. |
