I agree with many in that this really wasn't for me. And thankfully it bombed. From a selfish point of view that is. Mind you I have the 7" pic-disc single which must be worth, oh, 50p I'm sort out of sync with others about Someone Show Me Home, though, and much prefer the solo version. In fact, strangely, I don't like the Heat version at all. Strange, because it's not exactly wildly different! The album itself was hit and miss; mostly miss for me. But I do like maybe 4 songs on it that I actually still play. And these just happen to be Francis's compositions. Looking back, Francis just seemed to be the marketing angle and front man for what actually seemed be a vehicle for Tony McAnaney's songs. He was fairly high profile at the time after the BBC drama "Crocodile Shoes". It's funny. Quo try to maybe do something fashionable or up to date in terms of arrangement and production; Ain't Complaining, for example. Then we get the polar opposite to what seems to be in vogue, such as King of the Doghouse and Thirsty Work. And they still get a panning. So, basically, unless Quo or Francis play guitar driven rock, then it's a thumbs down. I'm not sure if that's a reflection on the music or us as narrow minded and intolerant fans. Bit of both maybe? The yellow jacket, I'm afraid, is a crime against fashion. Actually, it's just a crime

Bit of a disaster album really and just strange in places and not what I'd want from a Rossi solo effort at all, blues yes, even all out country rock yes, but not some of this, just doesn't really do anything for me. Timing, it was just all wrong. But.........I do like the song King of the Doghouse and it's melody, it's just so frustrating because it sounds like it's just Francis sat with some maracas and a tambourine. Where is the oomph, the balls, a band, any band? Record that track with Quo and it's probably ok. Best track overall probably Darlin, needs Quoing up a bit, but for me this would have been better single and choice for the lottery show, just suits Francis better in my view and is more guitar based. In fact the first three tracks on the album are probably the best and all had a bit of potential, but with the right band, right producer etc and without some snotty faced people with green hair who don't know the difference between poo and Dairy Milk chocolate anywhere it. Or whoever was working on it at the time! Give Myself To Love, nothing that bad about the song, it's just not great and not what I feel is right for Rossi. I remember watching that show live, didn't know he'd got a solo album coming out at the time and found it all a bit weird and the timing was all wrong. The whole colour suit thing, I remember plain coloured shirts, like bright blues and reds were about then, but the suits wasn't the way to go. A bright blue or red shirt with sand/stone coloured jeans or trousers would have been a far better look at that time than the suit. Hey ho, good job it didn't last. Not his best decision.

Sums it up really. It's a thumbs down as Quo as a band and Francis as a solo artist are no good at any other genre of music - plain and simple. They just aren't. In fact, I'd go so far as to say, Francis produces quite terrible solo music away from the guitar drive of the Quo sound. Perhaps the odd exception but overall he's just no good at it. He fails to realise it and just releases mediocre MOR naff pop as it pleases him - fair enough but don't expect anything to come of it, let alone public admiration for it. Many artists, solo or otherwise, just can't cut it in another genre of music because their talents lie where they have made a name for themselves, pure and simple. Applies to most things in life. Stick to what you are good at and worship, acclaim, success etc..will follow. Francis, for some egotistical reason, just won't accept the truth.

Didn't bother me at all. Wasn't Quo. Didn't use the Quo name
Not my thing, fine for his solo project if thats what he wanted to do.

I bought the single as a Quo completist (and misplaced loyalty a bit) on cassette single. I remember the promotion for this was pretty high profile and as above mentions Francis appeared on The lottery show and GMTV or whatever other one it was. One thing I noticed he had to use “Francis Rossi from Status Quo” on the sleeve and probably at a point where general record buyers needed to know who he was outside of the band? It seemed a bit of an odd timing to release. Don’t stop had been a huge success and probably was too pre occupied to promote this properly. The first thing I thought like many mentioned it sounds like an 80s wham record. Perhaps if he had done this 10 years earlier it may have worked but seemed a bit retro or old fashioned in production compared to what else was around Oasis, manic street preachers etc..
