Since purchasing a new vehicle 3 months ago which is equipped with a DAB radio I have over the last few weeks been listening to quite a lot of 'Planet Rock'. For those who don't know they play a mixture of classic and current rock music.
The thing I have noticed is when they play a Quo track from the 70's, 80's or 90's (I've never heard them play anything newer) the songs they are playing do NOT stand the test of time anywhere nearly as well as their contemparies. For example, Whitesnake, Rainbow, Purple, Slade, Nirvana, Iron Maiden, Foo's, Eagles, Frampton, etc. ALL sound great and as fresh as they day they were recorded.
The Quo stuff I've heard (all studio recordings) sound thin, slow, and a bit weedy by comparison - Roll Over Lay Down, Caroline, Wild Side Of Life, Little Lady, etc. all sound very dated. Tonight they followed a Foo Fighters track with 'Whatever You Want' and in all honesty it sounded appalling! The ONLY studio Quo song's I've heard on Planet Rock that seem to fit in OK and sound OK have been Paper Plane & Army.
So the question is: have studio Quo recordings aged well by comparison to other rock bands recordings from the same eras?
Maybe they should be playing the live version recordings from the current band that have considerably more oomph about them?

I simply cannot answer that question as no Quo is played on radio here. POMM is the only one I have EVER heard.

Quo have always sounded shite on the radio. Feck knows why. They sound OK on the likes of Radio 2, but in the company of other rock stuff on a rock station...........................not good

How many times have you heard the songs, Billy? Perhaps you are well used to the Quo-song, and then a "fresh" piece of music comes on... I know I compare the songs in that way.... On the other hand, the recording techniques of Quo..... not the thing you tested the hi-fi with..... But they moved something else..

I simply cannot answer that question as no Quo is played on radio here. POMM is the only one I have EVER heard. Get the 'Tune in Radio' app and you can listen to almost any radio station on the planet.

Quo do sound of their time, and I agree a lot of the sound is a bit thin and lacking in oomph. I think that's why a section of the fanbase like NTL so much.
I can't agree about Little Lady - I thought it sounded great on the radio when I heard it. OTL has a great, fresh sound imo. But yeah, I think Piledriver, Quo and Hello! do sound dated. Although with the Quo album, it is so gloriously outdated and neanderthal it doesn't matter. Less so Dog and BFY - they are close to timeless imo. Rain sounds awesome on radio.
A lot of Deep Purple stuff sounds very of it's time, in fact I think most 70's rock sounds dated now. Led Zep and Sabbath are probably alone in bucking that trend imo. Most 80's rock and metal also sounds dated. But Planet Rock is mainly a nostalgia station (that word again!), so it matters not....
Planet rock do play CQ live songs. Of these, raotw is dreadful, DD is very good, and rold is not quite right. To be fair, they also play Two Way Traffic and it sounds great. I wish they'd play rold from Live!, which would blow any song away from any other band that comes before or after it

I remember back in the 70s and Quos albums just didn't have clarity as other big name bands of the time. It's like they were missing that extra 10 percent imo. AC/DCs albums were pure. Quos RAOTW remix shows us they had it in the can but back then they blew it BIG time.

Because it is compared to the likes of the best from ZEP etc , but as a fan we loved the great RIFFS/Rossi's solo's/Johns shuffles , Quo where soft rock at there best compared to the best from the 70s , pointless talking about what came after .

I still reckon Quo rocked as hard LIVE as good as if not better than any band of that era.
