Remember getting an early promo of it around a month or so before it was released & it blew me away how good i thought it was, to me it was the album id been waiting for since the frantic four split. The disc i got had no song titles on it & i can remember playing it thinking - `surely this will go to shit before long` in my opinion it didnt, Bob was back & Quo were back for me after years of bland mediocre albums give or take a track or two here n there, i absolutely loved it & still do, really wish they would finally get round to bringing it out on vinyl.

Think it was all about timing really that gives the album its reputation. Had it come out in the mid 70s it would seem very tame, very formulaic with all the songs being short verse, chorus, verse, chorus tunes where the band doesn’t stretch out at all. But as it came out in 2000 following a decade which contained Thirsty Work and two covers albums, that to be honest, the band didn’t seem to really have their heart in.
It suddenly looked like they were trying to be Quo again, as such they got some positive press for this, and they actually seemed to believe in the product as they played songs from it and didn’t drop them after one tour.
Personally though, I don’t think it is as good as it is lauded. For me it wasn’t really a return to form, as the original album immediately proceeding it was Under the Influence. Which had pretty much gone back to the guitar based rock music I wanted from the band, so I didn’t see it as a big a leap stylistically. In fact, I’d say from Thirsty Work / Don’t Stop to UTI was a greater step back to the Quo sound.
While the first half of the album I think is pretty solid, with the real highlight being the title track, which should have been the first single, and I am still baffled to this day as to why it wasn’t. The second half, starting with the dreadful Jam Side Down, is very mediocre Quo by numbers until the last track, Rhythm of Life, where they do something a bit different and interesting.

Think it suffers a lot from too many tracks. A lot of albums, by almost every artist, once CD came into play, it happened to.
Every great album or best album usually only has 9 or 10 tracks

Old message board's fault for The Oriental still being in the set. All the posters made a big thing about getting it into the set and the band listened... I was one who did not partake in this movement... Those who did, step forward and be shamed! I think there was a vote?

I remember DavyNo saying that Baby Boy made The Captain & Tennille sound like Led Zeppelin. I think compared to what the previous offerings contained, with the possible exception of RTYD, HT was a good album for the Rossi/Parfitt band.

I was 13 years of age and even I knew it was a disaster waiting to happen... Granted, I don't think anyone saw it in the set 20 years later... Be that as it may, name and shame!!

(Jeremy's, not John's) "dreaming of the day when [oriental fans are] made to parade naked through the streets of every town in Britain while crowds chant, 'Shame!' and throw lumps of excrement at [them]". Personally, I liked it the first few times as it was different. It's still okay to my ears, as I haven't seen Quo in ages so it doesn't bother me that much. Is it great? Hardly.

There was a bit of a buzz about the band again, genuine buzz, which they then squandered by not building on it and it wouldn't return until a decade later when rumours of a reunion started to surface.....

Despite that, I think ISOTFC and QPQ are better albums all around.

It’s a great collection of songs with plenty of riffs and rocking.
Even the songs i consider to be more filler i really like. There’s nothing on there i want to skip.
It starts off with a real statement of intent with Blues and Rhythm.
My decision ….give me rock and give me roll!
What a line

I still like it. I also like ISOT4C and TPAOY. I achieved that mainly by liking the songs I like, quite a lot, and ignoring the others. Strangely this process fell apart when QPQ came out, and despite there being quite a lot of good songs on that, I never took to it at all. (And I hated the cover so much I made myself a new one.) HT cover is great!
PS I never bought Backbone, but I'm going to give it another try. I really liked Waiting for a Woman and I still do, which is a good sign.

Should be a black mark against your name. Dropped Solid Gold over it... Shamed!

I probably wanted the orientalist. Can’t remember
I loved the middle 8 when I heard it first. Sounded to me like Quo being Quo.
Don’t think anyone ever thought it would be still in the set 23 years later

Could probably take 3 or 4 songs off here plus some off their other albums since 86 and make a fairly decent album that represents Quo without either Alan or John. But only just. Cheers

Cheers As I said earlier in the thread, once CD came into play, it was overkill. All the great albums we love are 9 or 10 tracks. People like RTYD but it's 16 songs and everyone who likes it always picks the same 9 or 10 songs
