Why didn't you bring a camera? I would have given everything to be there. I wonder what that setlist would do to a 5-year-old though.

are you the one setlist.fm user who was there? I see they have the same setlist as you quoted above, but it seems to me you may have been shortchanged based on the following from the quogigography.net site : "Main Setlist: Junior's Wailing, Someones Learning, In My Chair, Umleitung, Railroad*, Is It Really Me/Gotta Go Home, Big Fat Mama, Paper Plane, Don't waste My time, Roadhouse Blues*, Mean Girl, Bye Bye Johnny. Additional/unusual songs performed: Caroline, Softer Ride, Nanana, Unspoken Words."

I checked Edinburgh Caley Cinema and the set list came up from some site or other. However, even from memory and from that long ago, I can tell you for definite they didn't play Big Fat Mama, Mean Girl, Softer Ride, Nanana or Unspoken Words. Umleitung I might concede but I don't remember it. Caroline hadn't even been recorded when I first saw them and there wasn't a single slower song played. In My Chair was as relaxed as it got! The set list basically mirrored the BBC In Concert from the Paris Theatre which was broadcast a few days later, plus Is It Really Me/Gotta Go Home. Radio time considerations prevented them from either playing that or broadcasting it. Bearing in mind that last song was longer than 20 minutes, Roadhouse was over 15 minutes and Someone's Learning exceeded 8 minutes, I think we did alright

If the notes from the quogigography site are correct Caroline must have been getting the odd airing prior to being recorded. I'm sure I read somewhere that the initial live performances hadn't quite evolved into the arrangement we're all so familiar with, which probably happens with quite a bit of material that gets aired early in it's life as a song.

dennis, they did play Caroline on the Hello! tour but I guess that was to be expected. Chances are they did tinker with it occasionally. In fact, was there not a scratchy audio recording of it on here recently from somewhere like the Reading Festival way before anyone had heard it? Rings a bell that.

Must have been joining the EU, had to skip a year to get in line or something. Thanks for the reminder, my 50th anniversary will be in a couple of weeks. As for the set-list, you may be right with Umleitung, although I thought they played Spinning Wheel, but hey, I genuinely don't know after all this time.

I was at that Reading Festival, Caroline was played and introduced as the new single. Waited ages for the Faces and they were a huge disappointment so we didn't stay to the end of their set.

In the days before they didn't shake it up a bit My recollections are a mixture of memory and the Radio 1 broadcast which a schoolmate recorded onto cassette the very weekend it was broadcast. A great mono copy played until the tape broke about a year later. They might well have played Spinning Wheel Blues but like you I'd never remember that. Apart from anything else, I didn't know it. Not then.

Caroline wasn't performed live until the Reading Festival appearance in the summer of '73.
Tons of people have been adamant that Quo played Slow Train live back in '74, but they just jammed a section of it during Someone's Learning - up until that was dropped
