Of course it was by Tenacious D but is lost to the ages.
So, what is second, and the current greatest song in the world?
Rolling Stone has 'Respect' by Aretha Franklin as number 1 and 'Fight the Power' by Public Enemy at 2.
But what do the real experts think, i.e Quo fans? I mean apart from Mr Blue Sky, obviously.

If we're talking 'song' as opposed to including the melody etc, it's a tricky one. Any number of Bob Dylan songs would fit. This, for example. If we're including the whole thing (i.e. lyrics and melody), it shortens any list considerably. I guess my own personal favourite to include the lyrical content would be this. It's put together brilliantly. Strings, melody, harmonies and lyrics that are almost unrivalled. Well, these and Chirp Chirpy Cheep Cheep, obviously. Its a close run thing

Forty-Five Hundred Times would always be my choice of favourite track. Lyrically, its not bad either, especially the early verses. Musically, it has no competition. Not in my little world

Odd that they should select a cover version as No. 1. Surely the greatest song is the greatest song regardless of who sings it? Although some versions are better than others, of course. As Otis Redding himself acknowledged when he heard Aretha's version.

That's two levels of shite between which it's barely possible to differentiate!

Since this topic is posted in "Other bands and music" I will exclude Quo. To call a song the greatest objectively means we cannot let our own opinion influence the decision making process. Is the greatest song the song which sold the most 45RPMs? According to Guinness World Records, Irving Berlin's "White Christmas" (1942) as performed by Bing Crosby is the best-selling single worldwide, with estimated sales of over 50 million copies. Or is it the song with the most streams? "Blinding Lights" by The Weeknd is the most streamed song on Spotify as of January 2023, with over 3.3 billion streams. We can argue forever, so I'll go with a more subjective approach. In the more than 50 years that I am actively listening to and interested in music, which song do I recall made me really sit up and take notice, thinking 'this is terrific, this is something I've never heard before'? Well, I can think of only one song that had that mind-blowing and eardrum-awakening effect and that is Bohemian Rhapsody by Queen. What an incredible song. Granted, we've all heard it too many times to still want to hear it again. Which is a pity because it is a masterpiece. What makes it a masterpiece? If you click on the following link you'll read A Data Science Perspective of exactly that: " What Makes Bohemian Rhapsody a Masterpiece". Here it is one more time. Don't click on the video if you're already sufficiently rhapsodized...:

Almost impossible to choose between George Harrison's "While my Guitar Gently Weeps" and this one, but in the end the riff literally everyone knows won it for me.

... You are being far too modest. The greatest song in the world is without a doubt this one: And don't just take my word for it (if you have some time to spare):

Seriously, for mainstream (Rock) music it has to be either Bohemian Rhapsody or Mr Blue Sky or for me as a Quo fan, 4500 times!
