Can someone explain the different recordings of Gerdundula. So we have the version on Dog. Then alternative versions from the Pyr archive. But what’s the story with the version in the deluxe ON THE LEVEL. Was it re recorded in the studio for the rollover lay down live ep. If so why is it not better known bearing in mind roll over was a big hit.
And do we know why they revisited this song in 1975 from all their back catalogue?
EDIT- hello changed to on the level

Good questions
Quo spent more time experimenting with arrangements for this song than any other I can think of
Later changed again of course with a "fun" live take
Chosen for the TV Tiswas special
I've often wondered about the whole Manston/James thing. My best guess is RossiYoung were fearful of claiming credit from what could be a traditional arrangement
That said, I've never heard it anywhere else. They can both be very proud of it

The three versions I'm familiar with are the 1970 b-side to In My Chair, the 1971 album track from Dog Of Two Head & one of the b-side tracks from the 1975 Live e.p. Live e.p. tracks are bonus tracks on the deluxe On The Level. My Hello! deluxe album doesn't feature a version of Gerundula.

As dennis said, Gerdundula from the Live EP is on the level deluxe, not in Hello deluxe. Also, that '75 version wasn't from studio, it is a soundcheck recording. About that version. Is was played that way on the soundcheck or it was severed later in the studio?

In terms of studio recordings, there's the early one, B-Side to In My Chair. Then there's the Dog album one. And there's one alt take from around that time, I suppose, released in 1998's Castle Compilation The Singles Collection 1966 - 1973.
EDIT: Actually, this last version I mentioned might be just a remix of the Dog album version, without the acoustic guitars, the tambourine, the claps, etc., and with the drums louder and rounder. So ignore that one from my previous comment.

In My Chair was the first Quo record I ever got. I was only 13 and I thought the B-side was weird But I liked it. When I bought Dog of Two Head a couple of years later, I realised it had a different version of Gerdundula on it. And there's quite a marked difference between the two. Especially with the drumming. It's more sort of bongos on the first recording. When they played it live during the On The Level tour, it was a big surprise. Why they chose to revisit it is anyone's guess. They probably wanted a quieter moment in the set (there hadn't been one) and simply chose this. As we all know, it sort of disappeared after that and pitched up many years later eventually becoming the 'muck about' bit in the set. Those 3 versions are probably the only official recordings with the rest being outtakes or demos or just PYE pretending they had some long, lost version. And calling it the early rough mix or some such bollox.

It was brought back on the thirsty work tour and was a real highlight in the early days of it being played again.

There is a version of it with audience dubbed on-top, but ditched for the version they went for. I think Big Fat Mama from the Stoke show was considered for the Live E.P., as a mixed version of that exists.

Only Rossi's vocals were dubbed, for Roll Over Lay Down, due to him having a sore throat at the time.

I prefer the version I heard first, the track from the 50 year old Dog of Two Head album. Dutch tribute band Status Quotes did a good version of Gerdundula at the Quo Convention in Minehead a couple of years ago, with the drummer playing the bongos
