As with almost all of Quo Lite's stuff, I really like half the album and hate the rest. My two faves being the title track, which is absolutely beautiful, and One Man Band. But some of it is garbage, Tommy heading the list. But for only half a band, it's pretty good.

A very good album sandwiched between 2 questionable ones. I just don’t understand why after this successful album they waited 3 years and then put put out their worst album. Defies logic IMO. Back to this one, it was a good return to form. Certainly better than anything released after NTL. And yes that means unquestionably better than 1982 & B2B !

And that's Rick's term, not mine.

You said it was half a band . In fact , RTYD was by Status Quo who , I’m guessing , had a line up at the time which wasn’t your preferred line up

Come on.
Ricks dead and Alan left 36 years ago.
The topic is a review of RTYD.
While I do think of the Frantic four as the definitive line up, constantly pointing out that adds nothing to the discussion. We’ve all been reading this since 1998 and the launch of the message board.

Until Heavy Traffic, this was my favourite Quo album.
I’ve always really liked the guitar sound on this. For example on One Man Band when Francis goes into the lead break you can really hear the rhythm guitars nice and clearly.
4500 Times sounds great, especially the shuffle before the last bit of singing .
I wish Better Times and Mysteries From the Ball had been on there , however apart from Tommy , what do you take off ?
The problem lies in that we all have different opinions .
Someone earlier mentioned Dead in the Water, which I’m not keen on as a song they would have liked on there .
The point is universal consensus is impossible as music is so subjective .
I really liked RTYD’s energy and apart from Tommy, there’s nothing on there I dislike .
Given all the positives , I was gobsmacked when Thirsty Work came out...that was a huge disappointment for me .
UTI was a step in the right direction before great, for me , Heavy Traffic .
But at the time, RTYD restored the faith quite a bit.
I’ve read a few times that Rick wasn’t keen on this album, which I found surprising.
Did this ever come from Rick himself in an interview or is it a rumour that’s been said often enough that now it’s accepted as true ?

Yes I agree the arguments about the line ups don't add anything but let's not just focus on those who mention the old line up because it happens from some of those who are more appreciative of the newer line ups just as well. So it's coming from both sides. As you say it does not belong in a topic like this, the topic is indeed what everyone thinks of the album itself.

Yeah, that’s the difficulty. Sometimes when I read posts about what if you were to make an eight track album it’s amazing the different opinions folk have . One man’s belter is another man’s duffer ! We haven’t mentioned Heavy Daze there either ....incredible how that stayed off too !!

Mysteries from the ball I like. Dead in the water is ok but not mad on the riff or the verses. Heavy daze, better times I’ve never understand the love for.

Favourite Quo Album: On The Level

Kinda suspect Rick had his feathers ruffled a bit here, and that may be the reason he's not so keen on the album.
Think about it, it's the most prolific he'd been for years, if not the best he'd been for years, and he'd never be that good again (maybe due to a knock in confidence).
If you take the album to be the vinyl version, for Rick, some of his best stuff was left off there, leaving the album pretty Francis-heavy. You could argue that's nothing new, but when you consider the covers, lighter songs, and one re-recording that made the vinyl album, maybe the ROCK in the title just wasn't prevalent enough for Rick's taste.
One of his relegated to the CD version, one of his best 4500 Times likewise, a very good co-write/vocal put on a B-side, and another of his classic Parfitt rockers not even released at the time.
Just speculation, but maybe a power struggle going on with Francis at the time which Rick maybe lost, and from thereon in, he lost the will and his way a bit?

He did get three out of 7 on the vinyl.
That’s more than average isn’t it probably?
I really like Good sign, One Man Band, 4500 times, No problem....
Like you say his writing here was quite prolific and good by his latter day standards
