Okay, I'll grant you that the cover is misleading, but it's completely iconic. I think it's even better than Piledriver's. I second that, the cover is excellent. The aesthetic, the image itself; of course it lent itself to a different musical style than was contained, but you can forgive that as they nailed it with the cover!

I couldn't say for sure but I had a poster of Francis wearing that top (a polo top these days ) back in the mid-70's and it was taken at Reading '72. He wore it all the time and was wearing it the first time I saw the band. It could also have been the Great Western Music Festival in Lincolnshire in May 1972. Probably one of these two.

Spare Parts is the one original Quo album that I don't own. When getting into the band and buying up their back catalogue I got a couple of compilations of their Pye albums. After briefly listening to those, I didn't feel the need to go out and purchase Spare Parts. Though in saying that, I did purchase the debut album, but it has been played very rarely - maybe it was after that I decided there was no need to purchase the follow up.

Some good songs but rather disjointed and at times too much going on within one track at times. The strings and horns work better when the song isn’t trying to be psychedelic. I can see what the band and producer were trying to do as this half way house between styles had been a success on Beatles sergeant pepper and magical mystery tour and the Bee gees and moody blues had brought the big band sound into their music. Tracks like “Nothing at all” work well as they are working in tandem with the strings and not too intrusive. As above says heard this material by default as bought a compilation once thinking it was all rock n roll. It has grown on me over the years but a bit of an oddity compared with everything else they gave done.

I also never listened to Quo’s earlier albums. In exactly the same way I will never listen to the Syd Barrett era of Pink Floyd. The frilly shirts image was ditched for jeans by both bands.
