For me, all of the self-penned albums since 1999's Under The Influence are, at worst, good and at best brilliant. Backbone keeps up that quality in my eyes (ears? ). I'd probably put it on a par with Under The Influence if I was to list them in preferential order. But we all like different things. My preference is for slightly longer musical interludes in a song with changes in tempo here and there. The tracks here are relatively shorter and sharper. Which is obviously deliberate. And that's fine. I can see the attraction in that if you're trying to grab attention and also not get bored. The days of Umleitung and Breaking Away are gone. But I can still play them if I need to.

An album recorded by a bunch of nobody's with Francis Rossi that should never have seen the light of day under the name Status Quo (and a slight to Rick's memory).
No surprise therefore at the instantly forgettable result and that it is not 'Status Quo' in any sense of the word.

I always think of UTI as a bargain basement quo album. Recorded on the cheap released on Eagle records and stalled at no. 26. Think it’s their worst charting self penned new album apart from perfect remedy. A lot of things sounds like a band trying to remember what Status Quo should sound like. But it did pave the way for Heavy Traffic.

18 months on.. Had a craving to hear waiting for a woman. Streamed the album. Really enjoyed it, skipped a few, sadly no face the music was available
Just works. The songs fit and flow really well. There's better material and sounds on QPQ but this works better as an album. I remember being critical of the drum sound but today it was only Backing Off where I thought the sound wasn't right. The snare hisses like a snake
Reckon in the top 3 or 4 Lite albums
And thanks to John David. His song here and his song on Rick's strengthened both albums

Heard it once instantly forgettable Cheers You can feel that someone in the band will soon be wearing a leather studded wristband, appalling.

... Disappointing, as I have rated Quo 1999 onwards as a good renaissance, with the exception of TPAOY. Some fine albums since UTI. Backbone has such lightweight guitars it does remind me a lot of Francis' homogenised and very generic One Step at a Time, a middle of the road album bereft of any kind of edge or interesting hook I thought. OSAAT the kind of pop and country easy listening Francis favours, not a bad thing if paired with great songwriting, but in that case quite vanilla I thought. They do hold a lot of similarities. ... Do you mean 'latte'? One the best albums..Never Too Latte

Haven’t heard it since it’s release. Wasn’t impressed. Felt no desire to revisit it.

Revisited yesterday and enjoyed it a lot. I'm starting to understand why eclipsed writer Michael Lorant said that it reminded him of the 70s Quo more than the previous couple of albums. I mean, "I Wanna Run Away With You" could have been on any number of classic albums, right? And it's not even my favourite song on the album.

After the dust has settled I think I was a bit overenthusiastic at the time. I rated it more than Heavy Traffic, which was nonsense of course. BB is still an okayish album, not great.

Its one of the ones I skipped although it's hard not to like it, despite the twee OH YES backing vocals It doesn't have the thumping bass/heaviness of the classic Quo era and I'm sure would sound better if it did
