Ah but whats worse - Thirsty Work, or Dont Stop? Thirsty Work, at least the actual songs on Don't Stop were good, if not the concept behind the album.

Agreed Victor, Dont Stop is far worse. Some of the songs on DS are classic songs the band wished to Quo-up, some are not. The arrangements in the main simply water it down. Why listen to Quo playing Fleetwood Macs "Dont Stop" when the original is better?
DS was a huge hit, unfortunately meaning they had to do more. The record company will expect and promote what sells, and in that era Quo'a original material was not selling but the covers albums were.
TW is weak, yes, but at least it is original and it does have at least some good tracks. Different, varied, not brought to successful fruition but just enough to make it worthy as a Quo release.

I did try to listen to this album again but, even with frequent skipping, I just couldn't continue by the time I'd got past the half way mark. I felt guilty of ear abuse!

Damn. It's 30 September, twenty past 3 in the morning and I've never heard Thirsty Work in its entirety. A bit late to give the album a fair review. Hundreds of people will be disappointed. Thousands of Quofans won't be able to sleep. There's always this for comfort: I can't help about the shape I'm in I can't sing, I ain't pretty and my legs are thin But don't ask me what I think of T Double You I might not give the answer that you want me to
Good night.

SHOCKINGLY BAD. It would be hideous if it were released by a community hall band who don't know any better. Lets face it, no one in their right mind would agree to put this piece of dirge out to the general public. Rossi? Management? Record company? Where was the quality control here? Please tell me they were all high on drugs at the time. At least then we can blame substance abuse.
Status Quo. What a joke. I don't expect every album a band releases to be good but I sincerely do not think I have heard any previously successful band release such a terrible piece of so called music.
I am truly amazed they survived it. But survive they did and they did go onto make some credible albums - HT, QPQ.

You've actually talked up a Quo song that I have always detested ( Tango) but have put a different slant on it. Your thinking is unquestionably different to mine because I don't care about the craft that went into it; to me, it came out awful. And is as cheesy as anything on the album. But one man's cheese is another man's Argentinian dance move And I cannot for the life of me see anything remotely approaching industrial in Lover Of The Human Race! I bow to your better ear Of course, words are just vague attempts of describing something. Like someone said, writing about music is like dancing about architecture. I think Lover of the Human Race has a sound that's different from virtually anything else Quo have ever done (maybe with a few slight precursors on the JS/NTL era), and I tried to put that into words. In the case of Tango, I've not made my mind up whether I really like it or not, but it's a song that perks up my ears because 1) it's different and 2) the guitar parts, from an arrangement standpoint, are done really well. In fact, if I wanted to demonstrate to somebody that Quo could offer more than a lot of songs cut from the same cloth (even Francis admitted that Let Me Fly is "Don't Waste My Time, Mark 7"), this might be one of the tracks I'd play. Given what they were going for, I can't imagine doing it much better. It's certainly not lazy writing in my book.

You've not heard Pleasure and the Pain by Saga. And trust me, it's good you haven't. Aside from me thinking that Thirsty Work is superior to Back to Back and maybe one or two other Quo albums, at least they didn't approach techno. (Well, there's that Scooter collaboration but that's much later. Plus, I've never listened to it - which again probably isn't a bad idea...)

Or Paradise Theatre by Styx I think every act has it in them. As for Scooter, I rather like their mash up of Whatever You Want. But then, I didn't really mind techno and I loved trance. Still do. I'll get me coat

I thought Paradise Theatre was generally seen as Styx' best or second-best album? Anyway, we're digressing... Saga really hit a low point in 1997... they tried to mix their style with grunge and techno and it definitely didn't work, awful production too...
