On reflection Victor, I think you're right. I nearly said Doesn't Matter... I'd have to listen to both again to refresh my memory. I think its the jerky way the melody works.

Interesting as I’ve heard mostly positive comments about this album (I’ve yet to hear it) but it seems it’s the best received of the albums for a long time. The previous few albums have produced many differing reviews mainly on the negative side but this new one hasn’t copped many bruises upon its release. I’m looking forward to my copy. I’m not expecting a QUO album quite obviously from a 70 year old Francis, along with me no longer the teenager but as a 60 year old so I’ll give it a spin... LOUD of course. Hey Bill... give it a few more listens..LOUDER!! He really shouldn’t. Listen to something better. Mate, what’s your version of better? Your better may be my version of rubbish. Do you get it?

Some fans are not keen on the backing vocals on Backbone though personally I like the way they have been recorded and helps to give the album a flavour of its own. I agree, I have no problem with the backing vocals, they're a bit different to previous albums but bands and music need to evolve or they just become a pastiche of their former selves. I think the addition of Richie and Leon on bv has been a positive and I'd certainly sooner have them than Bernie Frost's falsetto squeaking any day.

What also occurs to me personally about this album is this. When I listened to it more closely on headphones I was listening to Andy's keyboard work on this album. And I think it's very good and fits the music well. I have not liked his keyboard work on many occasions, especially the brass synth sounds and such ... but on this album it's mainly piano and organ and the melodies are not irritating, they fit in well for me. None of these irritating too loud in the mix melodies like in the eighties and nineties

That's another reason why it reminds me of Doesn't Matter. The tempo of the singing lines in Jealousy is slower. And indeed the melody is jerky as well

I get why some of us would detest I see you're in some trouble
As well as 1982 there's something about it that reminds me of shady lady. I always could handle Quo overstepping the mark and getting shamelessly poppy so long as it was loud and powerful Others never could, and fair enough all round
Had another long car journey today and listened again, still noticing new things, theres a lot going on. I think the backing vocals work
Since I said falling off the world is the weakest song, it hasnt left my bloody head!
Am I alone in not finding BTC similar to SHA? I understand the rhythm guitar similarity but the vibe and sound to me is very different

I understand the rhythm guitar similarity but the vibe and sound to me is very different There's more J Geils and Centrefold about 'Better Take Care' than Sweet Home, for me! I suppose it is only natural that we should compare any new album/tracks with previous albums or tracks. Has given us something to talk about and disagree about! There are fragments of Quo songs repeating themselves. Possibly why we are hearing different things. No right or wrong. Just been thinking how a few seconds of a melody from 'All We Really Wanna Do' found its way into 'I Wanna Run Away With You' for example. Hopefully the tracks on Backbone are strong enough that, after the dust has settled, there will no longer be a need for comparisons and the tracks will have their own identity, as such.

What about that riff in 'Cut me some slack'?
It's f*ckin brilliant imho. Haven't it been done before ?? By anyone??
It sounds so simple yet so fantastic...

I was fearful of the album being full of "Winners" as i now like to call them, a very specific genre of Quo song which, like "The Winner", all have the same hallmark weedy lead guitar intros, and twee, nursery rhyme singalong melodies. This one begins like that, but rescues itself when the band kick in.
1 of 2 skippers for me, the other one also beginning with "I...." in the title.
Then there's "Crazy, Crazy", which is in a league of its own.

Entered charts at No6.
Did Rick beat his old band ?
Not that I care. Imagine it sold about 7000 copies.
Shows the massive amount of ‘fans’ who don’t buy product.
