Here's Backbone... Liberty Lane is coming shortly [21:44, Monday 8th July] No comments on this song yet... Not quite sure what I think, but the way they sing "backbone" reminds me of "Hell hole" No wonder they are expecting Spinal Tap jokes

Well I have had a listen to Liberty Lane a couple of times. Chugging along quite nicely and tuneful. Not a bad effort at all to be fair. The problem for me about going overboard over these songs is they just don't give me a rush of blood. Am I asking too much ? Just imagine you are pissed at a friend's 60th or 50th Birthday bash in a big hall having endured a lots of 80's disco and Down Down or Caroline got played..you would probably be up there head banging your poor old body to pieces...if Liberty Lane came on you would be tapping your toe relieved to hear something different..thats it really just different..but that is not what I want from quo I can find it elsewhere..yes yes I know those days are gone, just saying not a negative view of their latest effort which might be a grower. Liberty Lane really grew on me- I wasn’t sure at first but it’s the chorus that totally grabs me and got me hooked

I know Rick aint there but is it just me that thinks the rhythm guitar is so far down in the mix it feels like something is missing? maybe its the recording im listening to or Ricks powerhouse sound was as we all knew too good to be replicated, maybe its just me, its a cheerful enough pop/rock song with nothing to dislike about it .... but it aint Quo for me & never will be unfortunately

But it could possible have improved things.

But it could possible have improved things. The rhythm guitar level has improved massively in the live gigs as time has gone on, especially this year. The reason why first Freddie and then Richie were so low in the mix is easy. Francis. He and Rick were at loggerheads for years over the guitar levels and the fact that Francis's lead wasn't totally prominent in both studio and live situations. Sad to say but Francis took his chance as soon as Rick was no longer there to stand his ground and reduced the rhythm guitar to almost nothing in the series of gigs following Rick's retirement and then death. It's been a gradual process that the levels have risen again and now live there is little or no difference to the levels as they were when Rick was still playing. As for Richie not sounding exactly like Rick, why would he want to? He's his own man and as was clear was very highly regarded as a guitarist by Rick himself. There would have been even more criticism of him if he'd tried to be a Rick clone in playing style and stage presence. The vast majority who have seen him in action live have been full of praise for how he has grown into his role.

I don't think he could sound like Rick even if he would want to. I think what you are saying about Francis taking his chance is true. I still think though it would probably have sounded better if on the studio version Ritchie's guitar would have been higher in the mix

From what I have heard of the album to date I would consider Status Quo have become Easy Listening. Non of it is offensive but it is just average pop music that unfortunately for the band is no longer popular pop.
I wouldn't buy it and wouldn't expect many will. This is a show that has gone on too long and it is unfortunate as I believe a different named entity could have been created some time ago and created music reasonably successfully.
By means of explanation, if this music was by The Francis Rossi Band I may be more receptive to it, be better willed to listen and try and get it more. But as it is supposedly Status Quo I do not have that will as I do not consider the music to be that of what I want to hear from a band called Status Quo, who probably should have disbanded permanently in the early 80's.

How contradictory and absurd ! “ I wouldn’t buy it and wouldn’t expect many will “ Followed by “ If this was by the FR Band I might be more receptive “ It’s either Music you like or don’t. Never mind the name. Make your mind up !!

if this music was by The Francis Rossi Band
Sadly Porter and Francis are really only interested in where the next dollar is coming from and nowadays that's from your casual ordinary joes, the hardcore haven't been the main source of income in decades. Your casual probably might just know the singer is called Francis Rossi, some won't even know that but they do recognise the name Status Quo.
Music is a business as well as an artistic endeavour and for the business to be successful you have to appeal to your main consumers. Much as I dislike Porter for various reasons, he does at least recognise that.

As an example, many Quo fans didn't like In The Army Now (the single) because it just wasn't Quo. Had it been from a different band (such as Floyd) they would probably have had better acceptance of it and possibly even have heaped praise on it
