Me too. I just get snorty when I see some of the best of the past being sidelined in favour of widdly keyboards (particularly by people calling themselves academics ... ) Have you got a printed Merriam-Webster? I trotted over to the On Line one, but it's limited and the only dates it gives are for (recent) usage examples. Does it say when the first use of the word "fey" as a plural of "fay" cropped up? (If so, I could rant with greater confidence in future.) (I have a Compact OED, but it's the 1927 one, so won't cover anyting from the 1970s or 80s.) 1971 was earlier than I thought but probably quite reasonable as these things always crop up earlier than we think. Some bugger has to start it .... PS I think the USA version was "West Coast" ;-)

I am always interested in the history of usage! Assist me please - who was using the expression "prog" to describe pre-punk music in the 70s? (I admit it was possible as punk happened in 1975 ish) I was reliant on UK music newspapers and radio, I didn't for instance see much USA stuff, and nothing from continental Europe.
...Tbh, I'm always more interested in whether I like the music or not than the label being used to pigeonhole it, especially as so many artists draw upon many influences & often stray from their perceived musical style. This! [Like SO much Prog/Progressive Rock, this thread is in danger of disappearing up it's own a**e! It's also why there's ALWAYS room for FF-era Quo in my life ]

Can't help you with fay/fey. You may be right, perhaps prog naturally travels from west to east!

One thing I just realized. There ain't no chorus on this album except for All the Reasons. Do not really count "I am yours tonight" and "Roll baby roll" as a choruses. I don't miss them but I just realized that their way of wrighting songs changed later as most of the songs on later albums has some kind of chorus.

Are there examples of no chorus, or really short chorus songs that came later? I sometimes think Francis changed his writing to become more conventional (got to have "a bridge" etc) as was stung by the stupid/simple comments

No, you confuse the concepts refrain and chorus. According to Wikipedia: I wouldn't even include "Oh Baby" in the first category, it's not that kind of melodic hook to me. The hook (or refrain if you like) of "Don't waste my time" is not either the same every verse. "You spend my money but come on honey don't waste my time" / "You spend my money and honey you sure did waste my time".

I do agree mostly agree well apart from what you say about Oh baby See below from Universal song writing archive. Oh baby is clearly set out as verse and chorus. Not part of a verse which a refrain would be. I'm tellin' you baby you'd better change your ways I'm tellin' you baby I mean what I say Last time tellin you to stop that jive Gonna find yourself outside Oh baby, whatcha gonna do I'm sick and tired of foolin' around with you Last time tellin' you baby you'd better change your ways Last time tellin' you baby I mean what I say Last time tellin you to stop that jive Gonna find yourself outside Oh baby, whatcha gonna do I'm sick and tired of foolin' around with you Songwriters: FRANCIS DOMINIC NICHOLAS ROSSI, RICHARD JOHN PARFITT © Universal Music Publishing Group, BMG Rights Management
