You’ve said you’re not a musician so yes pretty pointless arguing with you Cheers It’s ok we are talking about drummers not musicians 😜 Oh yeah that ol chestnut .when you’ve been earning a living from being a professional musician for over 25 years that one gets pretty tiresome but thanks anyway possibly it’s still amusing to some Cheers

Of those 2 tracks listed. The studio one because its is more emotional. I enjoyed the 91 more than I expected, especially at the start but then it got too fancy for me.
I checked out a few other versions. '75 live - such a poor recording on youtube that it might have been great if you were present but not for me.
I tried 84 EOTR but I don't get it. Sorry chaps.
I keep coming back to the 82 live version. It gets me every time... it might not be as heavy but boy it keeps me hooked with its musical variations. I love the lighter delicate moments. Listening to it for me is like being on a rollercoaster. The only small quibble I'd have, having just listened to a number of versions this evening, is that it starts too fast and lacks the sadness it needs at the start.
Have any of you seen that interview from the late 70s/early 80s with a female fan, dark curly hair who is also a music teacher and she starts to say how musically inventive they are? I think she's talking to Terry Wogan. Well for me this tracks illustrates what she's talking about. This is their version of Bach's variations.

"We were trying to make the song current for that incarnation of the band," said Rossi. "Whether or not we were successful in that… well, probably not. Musically speaking, it will have been tidier than the original – the playing would have improved. But, as we discovered on the [Frantic Four's 2013] reunion tour, that's not really what it's all about. After doing it live again three years later, we went, 'What the fuck's this extra verse all about?' – and we got rid of it." For me, it's the original every time, no matter how 'polished' the later version sounded. Funny, I've always preferred the 'Live' album's 4500x, it's the one I heard before the 'Hello' version and I played it to death.
Having said that though, I'd really love to hear the full/uncut EOTR version - does a version exist anywhere for us mortals to hear??

It’s why that original sung intro by Rick works so well. Quo were never a deep, meaningful lyric band but they had their moments. There's nobody on the end of my line I'm in time but somebody's missing Maybe I can find a hand for my hand If I find a well for my wishing Be my friend, be my friend It gets lonely on a table for two Laughing on your own can be no fun Even people that are talking to you Remind you that you're really with no-one Be my friend, be my friend

If there is, Quoincidence would be the man to know and track it down.

[Aside: Has anybody heard Brian Downey's Alive and Dangerous?? The same thing happens there as with JC+Quo... Downey's the 'most right' drummer for Lizzy's music, none of the other drummers 'get' it - he just sounds right.

If there is, Quoincidence would be the man to know and track it down. Well... As well all know, the 24 track audio masters and both edited tape masters were found way back in 09/10 during the Pictures Documentary filming. I have a bootleg of the full version but no official audio of the full performance, for the moment. If that's good enough gerhI am hoping to get a better copy of my current Milton Keynes boot at some point off of Raymond from Status Quotes, great guy! Cheers

1973. As said above, no John means it's inferior. Simple as that. Plus, the subtleties of the first one are more appealing to me.

I had a radio cassette of "the charlie gig" before I had Hello, so that was always the one. Still is. Probably why I didn't listen to the studio version much. It was only about 5 years ago I realised just how brilliant the original is. I'm unlikely to listen to RTYD again, unless some bastard somewhere decides it's gonna be album of the month

Sacrilege perhaps, but I always preferred the RTYD version, as it has all 'the bits' and the brilliant ending etc.....however I reckon the EOTR version tops it...would love to have a decent recording of that.
