Pip Williams should just have released a solo album instead of doing it by stealth on his production of very mediocre Quo tracks, rendering them even worse with his cotton candy style and his instantly recognisable but hackneyed guitar solos. God knows what Francis was thinking letting him loose when he could play infinitely better himself if he actually tried.

Musical progression
Wasn’t a lot after John left....
Mysteries from the ball was one. A new take on the Quo sound. And to me a good song. Don’t get why the song is bashed in the OP. I like 3 of the 4 songs in th OP
What else was a progression? I can think of a few but there’s not many...
You’re the one for me Army Power or rock Don’t mind if I do

My original post (which I see has been edited by admin) alluded to Tommy being included on RTYD album instead of those and that Francis acted irresponsibly as producer. No wonder Rick didn't write anything for TW.

Heavy Daze WTF is that shit A pretty good rocker?
Tommy is the worst I've ever heard from any version of this band. Utterly without merit.

Nothing wrong with the songs in the OP... if anything, they were better than a few of the other tracks that made it onto the album That's what I thought. That particular bunch of tracks... Heavy D, Mysteries, Dead in the Water and Better Times were head n shoulders above some of the more mediocre and poor stuff Quo were dabbling with around that time. Not perfect by any means. Some of those recordings back then seemed very clean and 'dry' and dull to me, studio wise. Just the way things were heading in studios. I'm sure many of us found Quo (praise the Lord) back in the 70s when they recorded as a band in a very 'live' recording situation. Reverb, spill, reflections (too poncy?!) and the rest adding to the overall experience. Better Times - nicked a bit of Rolling Home BFY! Mysteries from the Ball - think the band were quite pleased with that one. A one-off idea? Lyrically complete nonsense. There again 'Paper Plane' lyrics made perfect sense, didn't they?! As bluehighway has mentioned, 'Address Book' was worryingly MOR and confusing. Rossi was in love though, which may explain. One minute strumming along whilst sitting on stalls with Richard Digance on tv sounding more like The Batchelors, then the next minute, in the same tv show, tearing through a rendition of WYW at 100mph with the band. Probably shaking the building but all the feel of the song lost. With Perfect Remedy, Pip W took the unusual step of writing to the Record company before the album had been released, saying he thought the material too lightweight and he was it against it going out.

Army is different but worse than what came before it. The others aren’t progress but pish retreads of old songs.

I don't mean better I guess by progress I mean evolution. Power of rock (as did others than came after) built on the army keyboardy sound....and was an evolution imo. Big man Dust to gold What songs ( the "pish retreads") mentioned do they remind you of? Sound original to me.

I would still rather listen to a Gangster Country & Western rap song then Tommy or Modern Romance lol. Edit on second thoughts hell no look at this nonsense. Though it might be up Rossi's street or is it too macho for him.

Sound original to me. Power of Rock... ripped off the Voice and tagged on a jam that lacks structure or a memorable solo or rythymn section. It’s not like the6 hadn’t done a song before that sped up. And ripping the Voice to me is not progress on 4500 times or Breaking away. Dont mind if you do.. done that many times, including name of the game etc etc I accept they changed over time and tried things. Look at the Heat album. Backing singers, horns etc etc, swiftly ditched And they did change after Never too late. They have tried change over and over since ‘81. But they just weren’t very good at it.

I really can't hear the voice in Power of rock Prefer don't mind to name of the game - never liked that one much. Can't see the similarity though but yeah, we all hear the same stuff differently

No and even if they some times came up with songs that was close the worst thing about Tommy is they tried it twice.
