how many years have they been doing these "winter tours" i mean doing "winter tour" yearly surely can't just be for money and to keep their road crew in work i mean other bands tour for several months of the year say 6 months say or 2 years if its a big tour to promote a new album or anniversary of an album and that it is it they don't start touring again over the winter till xmas Quo's problem to some extent is the endless tours year in year out ok they put out albums etc yet dont ever play alot of songs of each new album to promote it have they its always the same old setlist with one or 2 songs of the new album max played. Taking a long break for 6-8 months is what they all need to become fresh again i would think the shows is a polished turd as its so repeated every year the fake winks fake audience repeated chats by Rossi the ticks by rhino are so rehearsed. They all need to take a break away from each other. Because the average joe and mr and mrs smith surely arent waiting around to see imitation quo at xmas time every year are they highly doubtful. Sadly, they are!! The "winter" Quo tour "every year on my immediate doorstep or there's an outcry from the masses" in the UK is really a latter day thing - Quo commonly toured the UK in March to June/July in the mid/late 70s to mid 80s...there was no tour at all in 80 or 83. As the band's pulling power decreased ( i.e. no more 6 nights at Hammy, 4 in Glasgow, 3 in Manchester, 2 in Newcastle, 2 in Leicester, 2 in Blackpool, 2 in Ipswich etc as per the late 70s/early 80s ) it become a predictable procession of single-night medium sized gigs, small theatres and leisure centres in small towns everywhere - it seems that the will to travel to see Quo was deemed an unacceptable "outrage" by many modern fans!! Back in the glory days, even in the UK, the fans travelled to places like London, Southampton, Cardiff, Bristol. St Austell, Leicester, Ipswich, Manchester, Deeside, Sheffield, Bridlington, Blackpool, Newcastle, Glasgow, Edinburgh....or they missed out....Quo didn't "come to you"....they didn't have to....they were so much in demand that people willingly travelled to them.... Did the "winter tour" become the "modern norm" just to keep the touring cash filling the tills from lots on one-night stands in smaller towns as the albums and singles were becoming so f*cking awful and not selling like they used to!!? Stay close to home for the few weeks up to the Christmas break? That endless travel to lots of small venues ( without any 2, 3, 4 or 6 night stands where the gear could stay up! ) would take its toll - the UK in Nov/Dec? - cold miserable weather, cooped up in hotels and buses, sharing ailments - a recipe for illness and cancellation and "going through the motions" - as history tends to show...

Because it was going to be Aquostic. And by the time they switched, I would have thought a) there might be a cancellation charge to the Apollo Eventim group. b) the O2 might well have been booked up. The test will be next winter. To be fair I think this Winter is a fair test. Roughly Hammersmith is half of what they have pulled at the 02. So it would show they have reduced pulling power if they cannot sellout Hammersmith. Good point. I hadn't thought of that. I was merely responding to why they hadn't upscaled to the O2.

Using the gigography - link is under Useful Links on this board. The first Winter tour was in 1986 - though not exclusively winter. In the Army Tour. 1989 - Perfect Remedy tour was only a winter tour. Then they seemed to split the UK tour and have some key winter dates around Christmas. 1992 - they start doing big arena gigs for Christmas - Wembley, NEC and SECC type venues. This marks a massive change from only touring smaller theatres all over the UK. And from 1993, it looks like the Winter tour pattern is set. With smaller theatres being included plus the arena venues. So its been like this for over 20 years! I do remember from the C4 2001 doc, that Quo would prefer to do only a few big arenas, less tiring but Francis said that the fans would not travel and that is why they were still doing so many theatres around that period. We know that changed as they got older or less popular (you choose) in more recent years.

And there's no room to put on a second night on Saturday - Bananarama there instead ... But a lot of the venues are substantially sold out, and Hammy is minimum £60 a ticket for rear circle. I think I might be taking a spa retreat this December.

PS a final note from the old notebook ... (1990)
"Yes, Rossi and Parfitt are in danger on the telly at least of coming over like Chas'n'Dave or Laurel and Hardy. They didn't when they were younger. The tendency to begin to look like cockney parodies roughly corresponds with Alan's leaving, although it isn't his absence as such which has done it. The lads have to earn a living, and gradually, looking a bit cute looks more lucrative and less exhausting than laying down the heavy stuff.
We all get elderly in time."
(Footnote: they aren't cockney and Chas N Dave aren't a parody. It meant what R&P were looking like on the telly that night.)(And of course with regard to getting elderly, I didn't know I was born in 1990 ... )

In all the years I have been to see Quo (or any other band for that matter), these were by far the worst, most cringeworthy support band I have ever seen! Terrible (imo)
