Gil Scott Heron
Funkadelic
Robert Wyatt- Shipbuilding?
Elvis Costello and the Attractions, "Peace in Our Time" (Goodbye Cruel World, Columbia, 1984)
Dead Kennedys, "Holiday in Cambodia" (Fresh Fruit for Rotting Vegetables, Alternative Tentacles, 1980)
Frankie Goes to Hollywood, "Two Tribes" (Welcome to the Pleasuredome, ZZT/Island, 1984)
Behind the silly facade of "Frankie Say" t-shirts lay this smart dance gem, offering the ghastly suggestion that the superpowers love their nuclear arsenals because, well, they get off on it.
Gang of Four, "At Home He's a Tourist" (Entertainment!, Warner Brothers, 1979)
Things that mean nothing to these London art-punks: sex, money, power. Things that mean a lot: things that mean nothing. Taking aim at the boredom of urban life with guitars that sounded like glass shattering, the quartet spoke for those who were afraid to speak.
Husker Du, "Turn on the News" (Zen Arcade, SST, 1984)
Grant Hart's lyrics take care of third world refugees, the growing AIDS crisis and urban violence. Bob Mould's guitar takes care of everything else within earshot.
Lou Reed, "Strawman" (New York, Sire, 1989)
For one song, Reed put every card he had on the table, a scathing indictment of corrupt politicians and a dying culture, but also with a rare glimmer of hope for the future.
The Smiths, "The Queen is Dead" (The Queen is Dead, Sire, 1986)
Over the course of the band's first three albums, The Smiths' tuneless-yet- charismatic singer (Stephen) Morrissey wallowed in so much self-misery he made Goethe look like Seinfeld. For one shimmering six-minute moment, though, he attacked royalty and the political state of England with unmatched ferocity: "Her very lowness with her head in a sling/I'm truly sorry, but it sounds like a wonderful thing." The closing chant is pure Morrissey--"Life is very long when you're lonely"--but this time it had a context. For the full effect, you'll want to see the song's video directed by the late Derek Jarman, which gives the song's reckless iconoclasm a visual impact.
Sonic Youth, "Youth Against Fascism" (Dirty, DGC, 1992)
Over the course of their career, Sonic Youth have been avant-garde Glenn Branca acolytes, Bowery punk heroes and MTV stars--all without changing their sound much. They've yet to match the jawdropping power of their 1987 masterpiece Daydream Nation, but "Fascism" brought them back to the early days of punk, where change was in the hands of those angry enough to pick up a guitar. Choice line: "I believe Anita Hill."
Talking Heads, "Once In a Lifetime" (Remain in Light, Sire, 1980)
Wherein the middle class guilt trip reaches critical mass and has a nervous breakdown. Ironic that the song that would rail so intensely against the coming Reagan era would become one of the biggest pop hits of the time.
Wire, "Reuters" (Pink Flag, Harvest, 1977)
A field report from the class war. Over an angular guitar riff, we get this story: "This is your correspondent running out of tape/Gunfire's increasing, looting, burning, rape..." Nineteen years later, it's still no idle threat.

I was very interested in what Rossiwaistcoat had to say, though nobody has addressed or answered my enquiry about " Warning Shot" being an anti authority or anti establishment. As for Rick and Francis being Pro Thatcher, well that sickens and disgusts me. Ignorance of the facts via lack of education. People like Francis and Rick (who lack general education, from either home/family or their own research, college or University), don't understand the injustices of Capitalism. When you're in your rock star ivory tower you have a distorted view of reality. They should realise that only a miniscule percentile can be The Greatest Guitarists in the Greatest Rock Band of all time. It's their working class fans that made them wealthy and of course their immense talent. If you come from an impoverished family in Birmingham with 11 children where 2 of them are gay and none of them can go to College or Uni, you struggle to survive, why the fuck would you support Thatcher's vicious, nasty policies. Well, I worked with a guy in Australia whose family met this description. He loved Thatcher. I explained at length and in great detail why The Tories are his families' enemy and that 'bad' politics and Catholicism is the reason for his families' predicament. Education, contraception and continuous support for Left Wing Governments would improve the lives of Billions of people on the planet. Including theirs of course. In Australia there is a large portion of the voting electorate that vote for a Right Wing political party whose policies are to their detriment and the benefit of the wealthy elite. For thousands of years the peasants have given their hard earned money to the Kings and Queens in the castle. Capitalism will continue until there is a worldwide shift of consciousness to a unified Socialist Planet. Imagine.

Yes. They don't know what right wing is or that the Political party they're voting for has right wing policies, thanks to media manipulation, lack of education and apathy. Q&a, Lateline, 7.30 Report are already preaching to the educated informed people. The right wing policies benefit 10-15% of the people, the wealthy. Therefore the gap between 50% and 85% is 35% If 10% of the 35% changed their vote to a moderate, socially minded caring Labor government then the nasty right wing people would never get in again. With preferences Labor struggles to get 48% of the vote. Even Labor has a right wing faction that I disagree with. The remainder either knowingly vote for the Right Wing or misguidedly, through ignorance and to theirs and the nation's detriment.

"Censorshit" (Ramones)
Tipper, what's that sticker sticking on my CD? Is that some kind of warning to protect me? Freedom of choice needs a stronger, stronger voice. You can stamp out the source, but you can't stop creative thoughts.
Ah, Tipper come on, ain't you been getting it on? Ask Ozzie, Zappa or me. We'll show you what it's like to be free.
Ah, Tipper come on, it's just a smoke screen for the real problems. S&L deficit, the homeless, the environment.
Hey, hey all you senators wives. Better take a good look at your own lives. Before you go preaching to me. You're definitions of obscenity.
Ah, Tipper come on, ain't you been getting it on? Ask Ozzie, Zappa or me. We'll show you what it's like to be free.
The irony it semes it seems to me it's un-American policy. Yeah, we'e come so far but still only to find people like you with ignorant minds.
Ah, Tipper come on, ain't you been getting it on? Ask Ozzie, Zappa or me. We'll show you what it's like to be free.
Ah, Tipper come on, it's just a smoke screen for the real problems. S&L deficit, the homeless, the environment
