Bob never really took any stick for that album. Is it because he's Bob, Quo fans turn a blind eye? Or is it because it isn't Quo? It was never my cup of cookie, although I tried to like it. God, how I tried It just wasn't my thing in the end. Not everything can be. You've never line danced to that version of Down Down then? No, but I have owned checked shirts And I quite liked that Billy Ray Cyrus single. Yee-hah! 🤠 But don't tell anyone

You've got to remember that Rick and Francis' relationship, since 1985, has been purely a business relationship.
They couldn't afford to be sued by Phonogram for breach of contract; neither were going to have successful solo ventures, and they couldn't survive without one another.
I couldn't imagine Rick, in 1985/86, going on a solo tour and being a frontman anything like Francis—just like I couldn't imagine Francis and Bernie going out on tour together and them having a partnership like he and Rick did, even though he obviously wanted it to be like that given the playbacks and interviews floating around of the two.
Both of them needed Quo, and the record label wouldn't accept a Francis-less band, so they had to get long. For Christ's sake, they had to go on a chat tour to try and get them to rekindle their relationship.
We know they didn't speak or see each other outside of touring unless they were doing some promo work on TV or the radio.
There's a very awkward interview floating around, somewhere, of them being asked about the Thirsty Work album prior to going on stage. Rick answers, which gets some very funny looks between band members, knowing that Rick had barely any involvement with that album, and it is quickly cut short by David Walker.

Personally, I always thought that the keyboards, especially in the 80's, was WAY worse than any country song. There is my truth.

I’d love to see that interview if you have it I need to keep my eye out for it, as it's no longer listed on the archival site where I first came across it. It's from the same "B-roll" as this footage of Caroline...

At least Francis had a plot to lose!
Rick was bringing nothing to the table, by his own admission in FTMO at the time.
The onus was mainly on Francis.
But at the time it’s not like anyone else in the band was coming up with great rock songs for Thirsty Work.
It was just weird that Thirsty Work was so different from the music they were playing live that was hugely popular
