Yep - I am a Slade fan, have all their records, was in their 80s fan club and am still a regular contributor on their message board, which generated this discussion.
They truly are a vastly under rated band. One of the great live bands with a broad range of styles (compare Mama with How Does It Feel and My Oh My).
And of course they had one of the great rock showmen up front and had a huge influence on the 80s US big hair brigade that followed. Paul Stanley said - No Slade, No KISS!
My original point was as Quo fans we should be grateful for the vast collection of recorded gigs we have plus a proper reunion and the opportunities to see them live in some form.
I never saw Slade live, there was no reunion and there is no official DVD of the original lineup in action.

I never really have given slade a second though until a younger thirty something colleague at work suggested I listen to “slade alive”
It’s got way more in common with early quo than I ever would have guessed from the rather silly singles of c1973
Hear Me Calling is a fantastic song and performance.
I think any band that is as tied to fashions and trends to the extent Slade we’re are never going to have longevity.
Wearing a top hat with mirrors and having a guitarist who looked like something from a 50s sci fi b movie didn’t help

Quite an interesting article that. Probably sums up a lot of bands whose members have known each other for decades and whose stardom suddenly falls off a cliff. Noddy seems to make the most sense but he is probably the richest of them and can afford to be more easy going about things. He's also done other things like TV presenting and doing radio DJ work. I think a full on Slade reunion tour would be very successful and would give at least two of them some half decent income for a while. Remind you of anyone? But it seems its not to be. I think it takes quite a bit to dislike someone who was once a mate. If it happens, it's happened to me, the last thing you want is to go back...fcuk 'em! This is the situation in a lot of bands. Being in a band must be an unbelievable intrusion on your private life, you have no secrets and some funny fcuker might enjoy dropping you right in it with the wife. FR could not stand AL, I reckon "That song" being the issue and the drugs were total bollocks a smokescreen. The song issue was laughable coming from the bloke who wrote Blue For You, it's ridiculous. I think it was probably behaviour that led to a night behind bars, that doesn't sound like an isolated incident totally out of character. It's not fun knocking about with a short tempered violent nutter, it becomes a worry because you're always trying to manage things so a situation does not occur, loads of distraction and stepping in or actually missing out on stuff because you know the 'the nutter' will fcuk it up for you and you could get physically hurt if it's with the wrong people. Ditching a nut is difficult, they don't like it one bit. Distance helps(You can tell I've had to do this). After a reasonable interval, 30 years ought to do it, you may encounter them again and things seem okay and then with a sinking feeling you realise that nothing has changed and you have to disengage again...for good.
Said with feeling Railroad. The pattern was terribly similar to something happening in my circle at the exact same time. Person with a volatile temper, not actually violent (normally ) but inclined to sound off, blame people and create stress all round. It only really came to a head when they had to decide on what course to take in their combined futures. it came apart in layers and took decades to repair, although it did in the end (we all get old). I know next to nothing of the ' inside ' of Quo, but the minute contact I did have told that Alan had a quick fuse, low patience, and a somewhat sharp tongue. (Remember Bob Young's cartoon mag, Alan, "I'll just cut these ropes with my tongue!"), and also tended to pursue arguments to the bitter end. That sort of personality tends to be anathema to the personality who likes a quiet life and prefers the sound of his own voice (can't think who that might be ... ) On the couple of occasions I ran up against Alan, he was really nice, but then I wasn't working with him. But that is all just colouring-in really. What actually happened was a power struggle, not a bit of discontent. I am not sure Alan realised it until it was too late. We had two cats who did the exact same thing, and the quiet one was the winner in the end.
I don't think Alan was a nutter to that extent (we would have heard AFAE) but he was stressy enough to fit in the pattern.

Having re-read my post I might have been slightly unfair comparing AL to a "Short tempered violent nutter"... but some of his songs and his demo's pose many questions.
So Ends Another Life. Something's Going on in My Head. (I'm a violent nutter) demo Over And Done (Over) demo Broken Man (Black and)Blue For You (demo) Ease Your Mind (With this baseball bat)demo Too Far Gone (To regain consciousness) demo Stones (In Your Head) demo Who Asked You (You Fcuking ****) And the anthem of all serial nutters
I Want The World to Know
Just a theory.

One of Slade has just denied the mention of all 4 of them being at Reiner Haas' party. Dave Hill and Don Powell are only speaking to each other through lawyers. Dave Hill and Jim Lea are best kept apart (enough said). Jim Lea only talks to Noddy Holder through lawyers. Noddy Holder never spoke to The Sun about Glastonbury. Fake news all round. www.slayed.co.uk | www.amazon.co.ukdp/B09K27XN87

Top 3 gig along with Zeppelin at Knebworth and Quo at The Duchess, Leeds on the UTI pub tour. People may not realise just what an excellent live band Slade were. Only band Quo didn't want to follow, just as Quo were the only band Slade didn't want to follow.

www.setlist.fm/setlist/slade/1981/donington-park-castle-donington-england-7bd63680.htmlThis was my one and only time that I saw Slade. It was mental, bottles flying everywhere. If my memory serves me correctly, they were brilliant. Here is the setlist. I am surprised they played three covers, I can understand Get Down And Get With It, because its an excellent foot stomper and they made the song their own, but not the other two, especially as they left out many of their own classics. A reunion is probably a bit too late now, maybe ten years ago a one off at the Hammy would have been good. They played in my home town ( Andover) in 1978, too be honest I do not know why I did not go. Don Powell had some stuff nicked out of his car by a couple of lads, the Police arrested them, and I know one of them, twat that he is!

An interesting comparison .....
This from the W/ton Express and Star
Slade legend Noddy Holder back on stage in his home town Walsall By Mark MorrisWalsallWalsall entertainmentPublished: Jan 28, 2023 Noddy Holder is returning to the stage at Walsall Arena in July, as part of Tom Seals' groundbreaking music chat show Tom Seals Presents...
The Slade legend is reportedly "delighted to be back in his home town of Walsall" and will be choosing his favourite songs to be "performed live by jazz/blues pianist/vocalist Tom and his phenomenal band." It isn't the first time Tom and Noddy have shared the stage and they're actually reuniting following what Walsall Arena describes as "their ‘triumphant’ shows together in Edinburgh and London." Tom Seals presents Noddy Holder will take place on Thursday 6th July at 7:30 with tickets costing £26.
Francis Rossi is appearing at the same small venue on Sunday 24th September with standard tickets £30.
