The runt of the FF litter, their weakest album by a country mile. The contemporary production tropes don't help, the album sounded very dated very quickly, but the real problem is that by and large the songs just aren't good enough. After their astonishing run of albums up to 1977 it was inevitable that the well of quality material would run dry at some point. Thankfully it proved to be a temporary blip and the next album was a fine return to form. Apart from:

A disappointment at the time, although some tracks I've always liked. Oh, What A Night, Accident Prone and Like A Good Girl I still play regularly. I certainly can't say that about any tracks from, say, Thirsty Work or Perfect Remedy. So, I think we need some perspective. The weakest of the Spud albums? Possibly. But it was evident even then what they were trying to achieve. Or someone was. Record company? A quick word of praise for the album cover by the way. A lost art is album covers. They were all part of the experience. I do miss that. I imagine though, you play LLL regularly?

If you erased RAOTW and IYCSTH from existence, would it be such a massive leap in terms of songwriting and production style from BFY > WYW, as it is from BFY > RAOTW? I suspect not.

I remember when it appeared in the track listing, I immediately thought of Andy's version on the Reading '73 album (which I had on 8-track cartridge ) and thinking it was an OK song but nothing special. I did assume it was the same one. Which it was, of course, only with a Rick Parfitt credit on it. The song, like most of the album, is over-produced and multi-layered. A stripped down version could be very good indeed.

It's interesting that all three Pip produced albums in the late 70's were all different. It's almost like it was a learning process for him as much as the band. I think you've made a really good point here and I think Pip got it right by WYW, which - to me - is excellent production-wise. Effectively, it moved Quo into a modern, fresher sound but still retained the crunchy upfront guitars, driving bass & drums and Francis' signature, double-tracked, vocals. I think Quo should have continued in this vein through the 80s and 90s because it offered everything to everyone!

For those of us who remember when the album was released... this is a great compilation of 5 tracks off the album. I think 4th made it! No 3 in the charts and 2 singles. And 3 female backing singers. I really enjoyed all 5 tracks. And I'd not seen these TV appearances before but as a band, this is how I remember them.

I sometimes think the permanent grinning and mugging to each other is to hide embarrassment. It certainly looks this way in the first clip.
Someone show me is just rubbish. An attempt to sound like the Eagles

The sound Francis is able to get from his acoustic guitar in SSMH! Why oh why did he buy the Aldi green one? We hate it.

I've long wondered whether a stripped down version, devoid of horns & backing singers, would be an improvement or not.

Hated the album when it came out and still hate it. The songs, the production, the brass, the cover are all 🤮 The only redeeming feature about it was Let Me Fly.

Jesus what a shit show. Side one has to be up there with some of the weakest stuff they’ve recorded tbh absolutely no redeeming features. Side two starts off well with Oh What a night and Prone, but again it goes quickly down with stones. I can maybe take let me fly but that’s about it. Horrible album and by far the weakest of all the Coghlan albums I like Prone, AAA and SSMH... The rest as I said in another thread, sounds like a band phoning it in.
