Not bad that. I bought the first Foreigner album, pretty much on the strength of the single, Feels Like The First Time (which I still have), but also the positive music paper coverage and the involvement of Mick Jones. But I found I didn't like it that much. I bought a lot of albums I didn't like And the musical landscape was changing quite dramatically, especially in the UK, so bands like Foreigner I just threw to one side. Then the ballads came along, which turned me off even more. But two of these were massive hits, so what do I know?

Mary O'Brien, aka Dusty Springfield, was born on 16th April 1939 and passed away in 1999. 'Lonesome' Dave Peverett, lead singer and guitarist with Foghat, was born on this day in 1943 and died in 2000. Gerry Rafferty, Scottish singer and guitarist, was born on April 16th 1947. He died in 2011. Peter Garrett, lead singer with Aussie band Midnight Oil, is 70 today. This video is of Gerry Rafferty's single from his hugely successful 1979 Night Owl album. Big fan of Midnight Oil, seen a few times but now they have retired.

Lou Gramm's vocals played a big part of the sound of rock 'n' roll radio in the late 70s and early to mid 80s, both here and in the US. He was born on 2nd May 1950 in New York and became the lead singer with Foreigner in 1977. Their first five albums all spawned big hit singles, such as Cold as Ice, Hot Blooded, Urgent, Juke Box Hero etc. But then along came the big power ballads, Waiting for a Girl like You in 1981 and 1984's I Want to Know what Love Is, and Gramm's voice, great though it was, began to lose its appeal to me. So, back to their rockers, and before they went all schmaltzy on us, here's a 1979 No 12 US hit (didn't chart in the UK), called Dirty White Boy, which I rather like. I'm a fan of Lou Gramm with Foreigner or his solo music. Great talent.

Plenty of big name musicians have a birthday today.
Crooner Bing Crosby was born on 3rd May 1903 and died in 1977, while folk singer/songwriter Pete Seeger was born on this day in 1919 and died in 2014. James Brown was born on 3rd May 1933 and passed away in 2006, while Frankie Valli was born the following year and is still with us. Welsh singer Mary Hopkin is 73 today, while US singer/songwriter Christopher Cross is 72.
So, back to James Brown, who was a major influence in the R&B and funk music scene in the 1960s and 70s. Here he is, doing his thang, in front of an Italian audience in 1971. A phenomenon in the music world.

Barrie Masters - anyone? No, I hadn't heard of him either - and, in fact, I always thought his name was Eddie something. For said Barrie, who was born in Essex on 4th May 1956, was the lead singer of Eddie and the Hot Rods from their inception in 1975 until their initial breakup in 1981. However the band reconvened in various configurations up to 2018, the year before Barrie died. Like Dr Feelgood, the music world initially lumped them in mistakingly with the New Wave scene; they even went on a US 'punk' tour in 1977 alongside The Ramones and Talking Heads! Truth be told, I really only knew their hit single 'Do Anything You Wanna Do' which was released in 1977, but here's two earlier tracks, from late 1976, which epitomise their pub rock roots - 'Teenage Depression' and 'All I Need is Money'.

I saw the Southend band Eddie & The Hotrods a few times in the mid 70s and again at the London 02 Areana in 2012 I think where they were Quo's support band

Bob Seger was born in Detroit, Michigan on the 6th May 1945 and celebrates his 78th birthday today. (From Wikipedia: A roots rocker with a classic raspy, powerful voice, Seger wrote and recorded songs that dealt with love, women, and blue-collar themes, and is one of the best-known examples of a heartland rock artist. He has recorded many hits, including "Night Moves", "Turn the Page", "Mainstreet", "Still the Same", "Hollywood Nights", "Against the Wind", "You'll Accomp'ny Me", "Shame on the Moon", "Roll Me Away", "Like a Rock", and "Shakedown", the last of which was written for the 1987 film Beverly Hills Cop II and topped the Billboard Hot 100 chart. He also co-wrote the Eagles' number-one hit "Heartache Tonight", and his recording of "Old Time Rock and Roll" was named one of the Songs of the Century in 2001. Quo's take on one of his songs "Get out of Denver" always felt a bit frantic to me, although I do like OTR&R. So this is Bob singing OTR&R in 1983 - a great track!

Barrie Masters and Bob Seger?
Common denominator “Get out of Denver” of course.
Check out the Eddie & The Hot Rods version. If you think Quo’s is fast! 😳
They did it on TOTP. Mental but brilliant 👍

American blues rock guitarist and singer Joe Bonamassa was born in New York State on 8th May 1977 and celebrates his 46th birthday today. Encouraged by his father, who was an avid music fan and exposed him to British blues rock records by Eric Clapton and Jeff Beck, he was playing guitar by four and by the time he was eleven years old, Bonamassa was mentored and trained by American guitar legend Danny Gatton. When he was twelve years old, he had his own band called Smokin' Joe Bonamassa, which gigged around western New York and Pennsylvania, but only on weekends since he had school on weekdays. Bonamassa opened for B.B. King at several of his shows in 1989 and before he reached eighteen years old, he was playing in a band called Bloodline with the sons of Miles Davis, Robby Krieger and Berry Oakley. He released his first album in 2000 and has gone on to release 15 more since then. This is a self-penned track from 2016 called "Mountain Climbing" and gives a taste of what he can do when he breaks away from the old blues standards.

And so to the last entry on this year long thread, which has featured many of the great and good in the music scene. It certainly has been an interesting learning curve for me and in the process I've discovered several new bands that I've not previously listened to, e.g. Budgie - what a cracking trio!! I even ended up buying four of their albums! So, many thanks to all who contributed over the twelve months, in particular Mortified, with his anecdotes and personal asides, which added a positive note to the whole journey.
So, on this last entry, which on the 9th May, is Billy Joel's 74th birthday (and our own Mr John Edwards 70th - Happy Birthday Rhino!), I've picked Billy's 1980 track, 'It's Still Rock and Roll to Me', that got to No 1 in the US charts and which is rather an apt way to end this thread.
