Bootleg release. Not official and probably not the best sources of material

I hate to appear ignorant but how does a 'bootleg' manage to get an official release? I don't mean officially sanctioned by the band or their management but the fact that it's on a reputable (relatively) retail site? Have the rules changed since I were a lad? For example, you generally couldn't pick up a bootleg album from a record store back in the day. Certainly not one of the big chains. Just curious is all. Because it is very misleading. Which I appreciate is the whole point if you're trying to sell it.

Bought "Doing Their Thing" only recently and find it great quality. How come there is a new compilation with extra songs so quickly? Are the Pye days back?

Things certainly seem to be coming thick and fast so I suppose we shouldn't grumble about the lack of old stuff pitching up the way it does with other artists. Relatively rare stuff that is. It's just that all the Prince, Bowie, Stones etc. DVD's/CD's seem to have a more official stamp on them and are properly promoted. Quo's is hidden away and you're lucky if you stumble upon it.

Which I appreciate is the whole point if you're trying to sell it. These recordings are now over 50 years old and, I believe, out of copyright. These results in anyone being able to licence the recordings, as long as they pay royalties, because no-one owns them. As we are seeing they can then be released again and again. Whereas the official releases will have had their copyrights renewed, presumably so that can hold on to all that money.

I'm not so sure about this but I think the Doin' Their Thing still has copyright, because of the official release on 200X of The One and Only DVD. Maybe the Stockholm is the only one out of copyright, because it wasn't release anywhere officially. Now, talking about bootlegs. I'm tired of looking on the music section at big stores like FNAC or El Corte Inglés here in Spain and see loads of bootlegs. Not about Quo, but metal bands mostly (comes to my mind AC/DC, KISS, Nirvana and Black Sabbath). And those places weren't supose to have them, but maybe the grey market can afford this king of things.

I don't think it is a copyright/time thing - a number of years ago when Cliff Richard had a bunch of stuff going out of copyright he invited Tony Blair out to his place in the Carribean and shortly after the copyright on recordings was extended to 75 years - almost certainly a coincidence!!! I think it is a copyright thing about broadcasts. I believe that the law is unclear and so you see a bunch of radio broadcasts released on CD and available on Amazon and other sources. This certainly wasn't the case back when I were a lad, so something must have changed in more recent years.

I think I should stress that I'm not complaining about this stuff coming out. Far from it. The Doing Their Thing release is very good quality indeed, both the album itself and the packaging. The bootleg Heavy Traffic vinyl also looked excellent, although I never bought a copy. What we have is a situation where someone else is beating Quo (and their management) to the finish line. And, I hate to say it, but some of these unofficial releases are better than the official ones in many respects. Stockholm is long overdue. I have no idea what the issue was with that but here we are, about 20 years down the line from the last promised release, and we're still waiting. If this is control for control's sake, then it isn't really working, is it?

Got my copy today and it is absolutely fantastic! Quite unbelievable that these gigs havent been released officially, and actually I’m very grateful that ”someone else” decided to do it instead, as this is pure golden Quo history!

Just noticed that the CD states that it is "not for sale in the USA".
Something copyright is a play there, at least.

It looks like it's been pulled from Amazon and isn't on any other site I use, maybe Quo's Management had something to do with it?
