I have to say that their cover of this never did the band any favours. The bluesy laid back charm of the original is kicked into touch in favour of a louder, more in yer face approach. And it doesn't work that well. I always thought there was a certain irony in this. When Rod Stewart covered Get Back for the All This And World War II album and Quo were given Getting Better, Rod's version was all a bit hackneyed and predictable and Quo's was more sympathetic to The Beatles' version. Move on 20 years and and Quo ruin the song by missing the point even more. And in another ironic move, Rhino's cover of Come Together was excellent. So it can be done but without the intervention of, say, an impresario It's in the past and we lived through it to come out the other side but that whole Don't Stop period was pretty painful. From the music to the image. And if anyone from within the camp says image doesn't matter, then why deliberately contrive one? Arguing against it won't wash That's entertainment

Of course, just as an aside, we can argue for or against the whole project from an artistic viewpoint but there is a counter argument about the huge success that it achieved. If you want to discuss it's merits at a more basic level. Which, if it's your profession, is as valid as any other. Depends on which side you're approaching it from. Tis the way of things. $hit music tends to make more money

Unfortunately it became a victim of its own success and then the record company demanded more covers albums.

The video of them performing this song was always going to result in a discussion about Don't Stop in general. The project, the choices of songs, the workings of them, the image etc. etc. it probably turned out to be both their saviour financially and a millstone artistically. For a few years anyway. There have been numerous covers albums over the years; decades even. By dozens and dozens of artists. I can think of only 3 that I like. And none of them were by Quo. It's one of those projects you either go for or you don't but, generally, they are a relatively easy exercise in self-indulgence for the artist. In Quo's case, they (or those marketing it) made a huge point of throwing it at the public. And it worked. I have read since that the idea for a covers album was the band's. The marketing behind it, of course, with Quo impersonating the Dave Clark Five on the cover would not have been. But they went along with it just the same. Some of us just winced though. But that was unimportant. New fans were as important as old ones. Maybe more so

But they went along with it just the same. Looking at the writing credits over the albums immediately pre & post Don't Stop, around '96 there was a noticeable lack of contribution from one of the principle songwriters. The original (non-cover) B sides to the Don't stop singles were all credited as band compositions, probably to maximise the royalties. Thirsty Work had not been well received and some of the material was probably more suited to a Francis solo album. At the time of UTI, the mojo was returning to the band and different songwriting teams were bearing fruit, maybe they had to go "there" to come back. I am possibly overthinking this.

There's seems little doubt to me that Temporary Friend would have been largely a Rick composition. The others maybe not. Tilting At The Mill is difficult to gauge. But Rick came up with very little else over about an 8-year period. Or at least nothing that was accepted. He may have had songs that were rejected. We have no idea. Certainly, they had to do something after Thirsty Work and King Of The Doghouse. Just to make money if nothing else. Both of these were disliked by your average Quo fan. They tested the patience of many a fan - and we are a patient bunch! Don't Stop got them the dosh if not the critical acclaim or the acceptance of we who are so demanding But you can't live on covers albums no matter what the music companies thought. And there was an element of blackmail involved afterwards leading to Heavy Traffic. Thankfully, that turned out to be something of an epiphany. And here we are

Discussing something that happened 25 years ago. For context, that's the end of WWII to In My Chair.
