I don't get this at all. The song is truly awful. What's the point of having two goes at it?

An absolute turd of a song. As for re-recording it, no-one must’ve dared tell Rossi turds can’t be polished…

I'm not quite sure but I believe that in some interview with Francis, when he was asked which songs he was the most proud of, he answered Tommy. (It might have been Polly as well, long time ago.)

I have never understood why Baby Boy never attracted the same derision as Tommy's in Love. Baby Boy has a groove, something going on it and a decent melody. Whilst everyone has an opinion and music is subjective, I don't think it's anywhere near as bad as it's made out to be. Baby Boy is an average song on an album that contains RAOTW, Dirty Water, Hold Ya Back, Rocker's Rollin, Who Am I and CGYM Tommy is a dreadful song that has no redeeming features, on an album that contains 1000 Years and Address Book. Tommy is something Daniel O'Donnell would come out with.

I suppose the thing is, following on from the subjectivity point, Francis very probably likes Daniel O'Donnell and wouldn't understand any perceived criticism. Whereas, if we turn that on it's head, he'd more than likely put the boot into the Stones or the British blues boom of the 60's (which he has) and has also knocked some heavy metal acts. So the point I think I'm trying to make is, appreciation or otherwise of music is subjective across the board. You can't have your cake and eat it. But we all do. And that includes Francis. As for Tommy/Tommy's In Love, I don't like it/them. Not one bit. It's twee nonsense lyrically and the style of delivery is not my thing at all. It has a romantic 50's/60's ballad tempo to it. Extremely old fashioned, even in 1989. As for recording it twice, I did read somewhere a while back (I think Rhino said it) that they felt they messed up the first time round and wanted to get it right; so they did it again. Because the '91 version is obviously such a vast improvement

When I was young we used to tie a rope washing line to a lamp post and one of the big kids would turn the other end so that 3 or 4 of us could skip together, usually chanting in unison. That is what comes to mind every time I hear it.

I like the rather melancholy melody and its quite far removed from any other Rossi/Young compositions.

I've always liked Baby Boy a lot: to me it creates a nostalgic atmosphere I can really wallow in and it's got some stunning percussion. Here's to hoping I'll be able to block out the image of rope skipping grannies in the future.

So, back to my opening question, why did they do it twice, when it was crap the first time??? And why did the record company put it on another album?? The cocaine Lan said they were all on?!

Why they did it twice is as Francis or Rhino mentioned in interview, feeling they didn't nail it the first time. Fans as a whole may see it as twee, bland sonic wallpaper, but Francis rates the track highly.
It's an odd song. Francis's twee tracks are almost a genre unto themselves. Not quite pop, not quite country, an amalgam of both but with an underlying cheese and nursery rhyme quality.
Baby Boy, mentioned above on thread, is better. It isn't great by any means, but does have enough sonic hooks and a nice rhythm to distinguish it.
