These 'alternate versions' that pitched up on PYE now and again I'm not convinced about either. Some were different mixes and I would imagine some were simply found on rehearsal tapes from the original recording sessions. I think a lot of these were digitally modified to appear like different takes, long after the event.
Instrument levels adjusted, and certain instruments panned differently. Bit of a scam really.

Depends, when the drums, the guitar and the bass are being played differently, does seem like it's a recording of a different take. Which is not unusual. Some of the Castle stuff is indeed just the removing of one of the stereo channels and some added distortion, like the "Early Rough Mixes" on the 2003 Castle re-issues. Those aren't early mixes. Those are just edited versions of the actual album versions. But the 1998 Singles Compilation by Castle does seem to have some different takes. The ones present in the 1998 re-issues of the PYE era albums only have alt mixes (not takes). And some of those may have been remixed just for those releases (thus, recent remixes). Which is not bad, in my opinion, since it gives us stereo versions of songs like Tune To The Music and Down The Dustpipe. And also allows us to listen to some nuances that weren't present in the original mix. Kinda like the remix for RAOTW does.

Regarding the Pye era stuff, there was a Mexican EP that included alternate takes of 'In My Chair' (the first take, judging by the giggling which 'spoiled the misery' according to FR) and 'Need Your Love' (with Bob on vocals). These were eventually released in the UK on the 1992 Dojo CD 'The Early Years'.

They actually recorded Gerdundula at least twice when it was first written. The version on the B-side of the In My Chair single is different from the one that ended up on Dog Of Two Head. The former has Spud on the bongos if memory serves me correctly. Haven't played it in a while mind. The live EP version I don't think counts. Although it wasn't in front of an audience I still think it was 'live'. Although someone with greater knowledge could maybe put me right on that. A friend of mine bought the FTMO tin way back. It had the bongo Gerdundula. I liked it a lot. (It must have become Obvious I'm not a completist - and I'm hardly the one with greater knowledge )

I think it's actually a radio session for the Beeb, but it has a different guitar take to the one that ended up on the final release, so they either went in with a rough mix, or performed live, not sure which.
Need Your Love was the same, ending up on 'Live At The BBC'. Again, listed as a radio session.
I remember that '92 CD - quite a revelation at the time before remasters, deluxes, and bonus tracks and all that.

Will have to take a close look at those two different versions of Gerdundula for sure, I'm intrigued by the bongo version. And the two Mexican EP tracks - In My Chair and Need Your Love - are especially interesting in terms of whether they should 'make the cut'. If they are first takes, then they are not precisely re-recordings of course, but great rarities nonetheless
One other 'left field' idea would be to include the B-sides of the two Man Utd singles that Quo were associated with in the mid-90s, 'Come On You Reds' and 'We're Gonna Do It Again'. The B-sides are both instrumental versions of the A-sides and it is presumably Quo providing the instrumental - in effect, re-recordings of Burning Bridges and Again and Again. Maybe....

The only remake that I think beats the original is Tommy! Make of that what you will

While not quite Quo covered by Quo, the following two tracks - featuring different versions - were recorded by both SQ and Francis Rossi (solo): - - Someone Show Me Home
- The (Greatest) Fighter

I guess you could add a few more under that scenario:
- Going Down Town Tonight (Rossi home demo released on B2B and 12GB Vol 2, then re-recorded by 'Quo' as a single release)
- I Wonder Why (debatable whether you could call this Quo, but released under the Quo name, and Rossi/Frost)
- Jealousy (ditto)
- Rearrange (demo released under the Quo name, more likely a Rossi home demo, released recently by Rossi/Rickard)
- That's Alright (unreleased by Rossi/Frost, then re-recorded as a Quo B-side)

Someone Show Me Home is decent, the rest you can file under "2 versions of Shite".
