Great that he's still such a creative force and sounding so good vocally. I wonder what his reasoning for his radical change of production style on his last few releases is? When I think of a Jeff Lynne, especially an ELO production I think of lush, almost over produced songs, the new stuff still sounds great but just lacks that "specialness" which lifted those classic albums and things like his work with George and Tom to an even higher level.

It started way back when he released Armchair Theatre, then Zoom (as ELO) and in fact, listen to Balance of Power or Secret Messages, and most of the 'lush' classic ELO sound is gone. Still love that stuff and I do enjoy Alone in the Universe, but yes, like Quo, he has a classic period of off the charts brilliance. Like Frame though, he can still write a good tune.

I love Armchair Theatre, wasn't so keen on Zoom, thought there wasn't a single weak track on Balance of Power and actually liked the punchy, string-light production. I think all his work shows the utter genius of the man but having Bev, Mik and more than anyone Kelly with him lifted things even higher. It's a sad thing that he and Kelly were at daggers drawn for so many years up to Kelly's sad death.

Saw ELO Part 2 with the Moscow Symphony Orchestra in Edinburgh back in 1990, and Kelly was great acting as a 'frontman', great charisma and singer. Saw him in a few other venues before his death as well. Jeff and Kelly's vocals worked so well together.

On the Steve Hoffman Music Forums, people posted equalization curves to make the last ELO album more listenable! I wonder if this will be as mushy sounding?

...the eternal question
if I could only save my Quo collection or my ELO collection, which would I choose? That's difficult!
I doubt Jeff could have imagined, back in 2001 when the Zoom tour became 'the tour that never was' due to poor ticket sales, that in 15 years time or so, he would be back and back by popular demand and selling out places.
Have a soft spot for the Zoom album, especially the DVD of the CBS TV Broadcast in 2001. Thought Jeff's playing had been in good shape back then and a top level band with him. Guitarist Marc Mann fitted in well and the female cello section and Rosie Vela on vocals worked well together. Interestingly George Harrison and Ringo guested on the actual album.
Zoom can't quite touch 'Out Of The Blue' (5 Stars), but in terms of ELO for a different era, then Zoom (4 Stars) works for me. Always makes me smile when one of the Bissonette brothers hits the fire extinguisher with his drum stick in Mr Blue Sky...I think Bev Bevan came up with that instrument back in the day!
Good news about the brand new album.

Can confirm that the 71 year old Mr Lynne, whom I've been listening to since I first got into music at 10 years old, has delivered a belter of an album.
