Heard it again the other day, and I still agree with myself on this. Good, head-banging opening opening; dark, slightly creepy vibe and vocals, but then god awful cheesy vocals in the chorus.

Can’t say I know it. Which album is it on ? Ignore the dubious artwork. First 12 seconds: acceptable lead riff, maybe slightly over-produced. 14 to 18 seconds: settles into a nice solid Parfitt rhythm. 18 seconds to 50 seconds: slightly dark, subdued vocals, but a bit more of a "story" to listen to within the song than a lot of other Quo tracks. 50 seconds: STOP HERE. DON'T LISTEN ANY FURTHER. THIS IS WHERE IT GOES TOTALLY WRONG. Overdose of cheesy backing vocals where a raw wild solo would've been far better. IMHO of course.

Why did they nick the main riff from Queen's Tie Your Mother Down? Maybe that's why that Queen track always reminded me of Quo? What I find more worrying is that the openings of All Stand Up, Saddling Up and Two Way Traffic are all pretty much identical. But I still like Saddling Up a lot. The only thing I would've done differently would've been... don't have the solo so early in the song, and keep the harmonica throughout.

Something familiar about it though. And here it is.

Yep bog standard, can see why I don't remember it. Could be on any Status Quo release since The party ain't over yet. Terrible no, just ordinary.

Lets put it into perspective here. Far better than all the dirge from BTB all the way through to perhaps Under the Influence. So....yeah its a filler and doesn't add up to much but it sure ain't terrible. BTW I do like the bluesy harmonica fills.

I'd not paid much attention to the harmonica before as it's a bit behind the cheesy parts of the vocals, but just listening again and you're right about the harmonica.

I think part of why it stood out to me (positively, mind) is because it's not really typical Quo fare but without falling into pop fluff. The drum groove? The vocal range? The lyrics? Definitely not Quo by numbers.

My least favourite track on the album apart from Tongue Tied. Nothing wrong with Tongue Tied. It's just not my sort of thing.
I suspect the lyrics to Saddling Up are very clever. But they just sound like references to horse-riding to me and a bit silly.
Half decent if bog standard blues riff to start out and then it sort of loses it's way.
I imagine the inclusion of the backing vocals here and there is a production/arrangement decision rather than the way it was written. It harks back to the less than halcyon days of Bernie Frost.
