.......Ok, at the risk of sounding like the kind of macho tw@t that Rossi hates and this very album is taking the rise out of in places, there are at least 5 tracks which 'make' me drive faster than I should, or, help me lift weights in the gym. yay! I know I am late to the party with this one, and that kind of really underlines my pre-purchase indifference - ever get that moment when you buy a dvd which you eventually get round to, with a cast and story-line that never held out any expectation, but it takes you by surprise...well that's the case with RR II for me.
Tomorrow is today, Secretary, Cougar, Busy Doing Nothing, Black Widows, and Take em Down, are doing more for me than a similar number of songs from a SQ album for longer than I care to admit to myself. There are a couple which are a bit "meh", My name is Stan and new new new, but nothing dreadful - that makes a change eh!
No, it's a given that he won't win any prizes for his vocal range - he has a voice which wouldn't get him through the preliminary round of any televised talent show.....yeah, exactly, so effin what, as there is enough going on with the rest of the album to compensate.
Whether Rhino has the depth of material or the ability to produce another good album, or, whether he is worth seeing as a live act are questions I am unsure about but I cant help thinking that if he had been enabled to shape the writing and direction of Quo more than he evidently has done over the past decade or so, they would have produced (much) heavier and better material in latter years.
If you have been too prejudiced to give it a go, or plain indifferent as I was, I suggest you give the album a couple of listens (But Quo Lite fans of the 'Cupid Stupid' variety might be best giving it a miss......it's a bit loud!) :-)
(I would have posted this in the main forum as I don't intend this as a solo project post per-se, but feared it would be moved anyway)

There isn't anything wrong with loud and heavy music at all - as long as it has melody. I think Quo in the FF hey-day, during their heaviest phase, were past-masters at this. How else did I become a fan back then?
In my experience, the heavier songs that Rhino has written for Quo have not cut the mustard at all unlike his predecessor Alan. He has co-written with some really good songs with other members within Quo (such as Dust To Gold), but his more solo inspired efforts have not worked imo. His "heavier" approach has lacked melody and (its not his fault) he isn't part of an instinctive quartet that made it cook so well *unbeatably) back in the day.
Plus Alan could/can sing. Rhino cannot.
So I would have prejudices to take into listening to any further of his solo album than the song posted a few weeks back. Unfortunately that song (and pretty much all else of his solo stuff I have briefly seen on you tube clips posted occasionally on here) have only served to reinforce my view that Rhino's idea of heavy/rock is a racket. Gravy Train on ISOTFC also backs up that view - no melody whatsoever.
I admit I much prefer that Ska inspired one-off of his "Fiji Time"

I got it when it came out and I really enjoyed it, and played it quite a lot for a week or so. I've not been back to it though I'd say the same for Andy's recentish album. Tick my box is worth a listen and would make even the most miserable Quo fan smile Although Rhino's album is heavier than his first I prefer the debut. All these years later I will still go back to it sometimes. Republican is a great song and there's 3 or 4 others still sound really good.

For the record, I am not comparing Rhino with Alan, nor denying that Quo's blend of melody and power is what made them something more than a bit special, with a great commercial example being something like "Down Down" ("a hairy horrible track and this silly little voice.....or words to the effect from FR). But I guess that I have to admit to enjoying quite a bit of heavy music that a sizeable proportion of Quo fans would regard as a "racket" - Bands such as Foo Fighters have delivered more power than Quo ever did, but to my mind have matched the ability to 'blend' with some lovely melody (hence their status on the world stage), whereas further along the scale are bands like UFO, then up the far end, are the likes of Motorhead - my taste goes across the range, as does Rhino's so it seems.
A few weeks in and I am playing RR2 to death, and if anything the 'weaker' tracks are growing on me, and the 'stuff of racket', such as Secretary are still hitting the spot. My point, and my regret, is that this kind of approach to song writing, this kind of drive, didn't feature alongside the combined talents of latter day Quo, as opposed to tossing about with accordion players and being part of a musical sacrilege.

I'm not sure why this thread has popped up again after 5 years but, as I wasn't on here in 2017, I'll just state my total agreement about Rhino's Revenge II, which, for me, was the best album I'd heard that year. I'm still playing it 5 years later. To give that some context, I've not played Backbone in at least a year and possibly more. It's probably no coincidence but the first Rhino's Revenge album was also better than anything Quo had released in the previous 9 years and also until Heavy Traffic came along. I wish Mr Edwards had the time and the material to record more. Incidentally, get his recent live album. It's seriously good
