So, 1972. Glam rock started to become the main dominance in the charts, but then BAM!, from out of nowhere came Paper Plane in the summer, making the top 10!! Piledriver was released in December of '72, and really was the first 'heavy' album, self produced too.
Highlights for me: Unspoken Words, A Year, Oh Baby... ye know what, feck it, the whole album!!
Rating out of 10... hmm..... very high 8, they were definitely going the right direction, but better was to follow in my opinion.

In the light of the modern CQ live gig situation, the appreciation of a golden album like this at a golden pivotal time in the upsurge of your favourite band is ever higher. 10/10. Right moment, right time with this album and it did exactly what it said on the tin. The growth and experimentation stage of the previous few years had its reward, which was to be eclipsed further with the next album of course

8 1/2, but only dropping marks by comparing it to what was due next........

Piledriver didn't get the highest chart accolade - that came next with Hello. But it was the real breakthrough album because it successfully translated what they were doing on stage (that was only getting small, if still strong recognition) into the studio as the preceding albums had slowly done, but having found them the right new management and record label to do so, and promote them properly for what they had become.
It is for that reason especially it gets a full house for me, because without it, history and the even higher successes of the coming few years might not have happened the way they did.
Another way of looking at is that the marketing strategy was perfect for them, with Piledriver, at a time when superficially tacky stunts decades later blurred over the band they had been and was a cheapened down dumbing of their original ethos

10/10 for me. My favourite Quo album and the second one I bought after JS. All fantastic tracks and a great mix of heavier and slower stuff. Standouts for me BFM (best track by any band ever !), PP and Oh Baby.

8.5/10, the jig is not in RHB, otherwise almost perfect. As 4 C says: only dropping marks by comparing it to what was due next........

7/10 ... don't get me wrong, it's a fantastic album, but there are other albums of them for me which are even better.

9/10 let down (for me) by Paper Plane. Never really "got" paper plane like so many others do

10/10! Anything else would be impossible IMO. After the great warm-up with Ma Kelly and Dog, now every piece fell to the exact right place, and this became the start of the real golden era, the first of the most impressive full hand/five classic albums in a row delivered by any artist in music history ever!

10/10 - This is the album that got me into Quo. Well balanced album and much more quality than they have ever been given credit for.
I had previously heard Don't waste my time on the Reading Festival live compilation DWMT and Unspoken words are still my Favourite quo tracks.

It's gets a 9/10 from me. Stand out tracks in my opinion, Don't Waste My Time, Paper Plane,(a top 10 hit during the winter of 72/73) A Year and Big Fat Mama. Agree with the above about the album cover. As I've said before the Picture's for the cover were taken at my first Quo concert, Harlow Playhouse 05/02/72.
