I wondered whether Andy Bown always had his sights set higher than Quo, but realised he might never get significant commercial success and recognition in his own right. He must have been relatively respected as a musician to be employed by Pink Floyd. He has his solo albums but the sales of them probably never amounted to much. Maybe he saw the opportunity of earning a steady wage with Quo and has capitalised it.
You can't blame him, there are so many people whose occupation is musician yet they don't make a living from it.

I wonder if he was kicking himself back in '76 for having quit Peter Frampton just in time to miss out on Frampton Comes Alive!

As of '76, whilst Frampton Comes Alive! was becoming a worlwide phenomenon, Andy would be working as a very low profile session musician. I doubt he even knew whether or not he'd be working with Quo subsequent to the Blue For You tour. Obviously, in retrospect he landed on his feet & started a 40 year career with Quo, but that wouldn't be forseeable.

Andy settled for a Steady Job with Quo, got to write a couple of hit singles and never came across as arrogant, and even though originally I thought he was going with the reunion tour, (which Rossi wanted) he talked himself out of it, realising he wasn't an essential part of what 70's Quo was. Fair enough, though had he been there he would've been welcomed by the Quo army, though as it turned out the magic of the reunion was partly due to the fact that Andy wasn't there.!!

Much better without Andy on the reunion tour, could you imagine if he was on tour. There wouldn't have been April.... or Oh Baby & others on the setlist.

I'm not sure what the depths of Andy's ambitions ever were but it may be something as simple as the offer of a regular income plus the fact that he got on so well with each member of the band. You never hear of him having had any run-ins with anyone along the way.
Actually, as a side issue and following up on the Peter Frampton thing, I saw Mr Frampton support Uriah Heep back in the mid 70's (1974 maybe?) and I wonder if Mr Bown was in the line up. Never thought about that before.

Quo, in both its incarnations, have benefitted from the presence of the very talented and amiable Mr Bown.
I tend not to have a parochial attitude about his keyboard contributions and think he has, largely, provided an extra dimension to their music. I love the additions for example on songs like Mountain Lady.
He could have fitted into the reunion. It would simply have been possible for him to sit out songs like ASS&W etc where no keyboard features
Had CQ played much more of their back catalogue then I think his talents and contributions would have been better utilised - but that is for another topic.

Had the FF prevailed after the second reunion, possibilities like this existed. But it was not to be.

Just as well, would've had a sore neck from headbanging. letsrock Take Me Away would be insane to hear too.

I imagine he is pretty happy as his songs have had a wider audience than they would have otherwise.
When was the last time he wrote anything decent ?

Andy unfortunately represents much of what I don't like with Quo. Too much keyboard and piano.

I actually think his last solo album is very decent but very little of it would suit Quo. Maybe Rubber Gloves at a push or Ruby And Roy (the weakest track on the album in my opinion). Last 'decent' song for Quo? Probably Dust To Gold which I believe was largely his baby. More than decent that one. Although I'm also quite partial to Never Leave A Friend Behind.
