CQ at Donington back in 2014. Hell of a performance.
Perhaps they are better in front of an audience that they have a point to prove to?!

Having a wee listen now... and I hear what you mean. They are on fire.
Half way through this clip now - and they're taking it seriously cos its a proper rock crowd. And I'm enjoying it.

I've said before that Glastonbury 09 was a case in point where they had something to prove, outside of the usual audience. There is an element of this here as well. No unnecessary elaborations - just an emphasis on some solid sounding music.
Its got a much better vibe than the likes of that terrible Montreux cardboard cut-out as well
It has to be said that this footage plays some of the best 'classics' from the Quo era and misses out some of the usual frothy entertainment filler. That helps a more favourable perception.
So still the 'same old' - but at least minus the cheese.

I cant believe you havent seen them. Rick opening Caroline is brilliant. Quo,of the 70s, is a band never to be bettered and I see CQ as a differrent band but with Rick Parfitt rocking hard I still get a buzz from them. Nothing beats Rick rocking hard with Quo. CG you really should go see them electric. Those 2 guitars LOUD...mmmmmmmmm

I guess you can't avoid the parts where they're in automatic mode but no doubt when Rick or Francis are true blue, it's worth the price of the ticket.

I meant that when there's a gig like Glastonbury or Download where they know they're on show, they put in that extra effort. But when its the general tour, then they go more into automatic mode. That clip also says that Rick and Francis are the magic of CQ - well supported by the team of course - but they are the star dust.

Watching that still brings back to me (yet again repetition I know) that CQ as a whole, would have shown the true talent they have in each band member much better through playing the actual material they have written. That is, beyond just the two/three songs (out of 30 yrs recordings!) that have stayed in as part of the permanent state of the overall CQ set as seems almost certain right through to their retirement.
What you get in this clip is, exactly as just posted above, the magic of Rick and Francis playing the original classics when the motivation of a different audience has lifted them up a level from the usual coasting along in 3rd gear. Its this for me that vastly separates the FF playing their own material, from the post 86 band playing them.
The rest of the band, on the basis of the roles they play at shows, are indeed just a supporting cast and in some respects may as well be session musicians.
Its just my view, but it hasn't done Rhino, Andy and whoever has been drumming in that 30yr period some of the justice they perhaps deserve.

I was there, and yes, Quo were very good. Twice as good as the previous time I saw CQ (Brum 13).
Depressingly, better for a shorter set as all the crap in the middle was gone
And yes, playing with a point to prove. They were all clearly delighted to be going down so well

The set worked for download as the audience wanted plenty of stuff from 12gb and Army They enjoyed bfm. DD got the best reaction Imo, if they'd played more than a few songs from the last 30 yrs they wouldn't have pulled it off For audience reaction, oriental and cuoy were politely received but noticeably less popular than everything else

However, that only makes me wonder just how well received Quo might have been if it had been the FF doing the gig
