Surely this is an outtake from a solo project though. There are literally no guitars on it As bad as anything that followed it. Awful. There are guitars on it. Here it is, enhanced, during the first verse, for example we.tl/t-8Y3rrqfwZFI like the song and I like it's a one-off in their repertoire. I really like that synth sound for the solo ahah Yeah, the guitars are crystal clear on this snippet, although they are evident on the full recording - if back in the mix a bit. gav is right. The Rockers Rollin' compilation liner notes give it the same copyright as the recordings from the Never Too late album - (c) Mercury Records 1981. So it looks like it was recorded back then, although that's obviously not definitive proof. But it is, shall we say, suggestive

...I'd been after one of the foreign Jealousy single releases for almost 20 years (on which this song first appeared) but had never managed to get hold of one. I still haven't as it happens... I have one - the 'Made in Ireland' one, bought it when it came out here; dunno why I've kept it for so long tho! Lucky sod

It's Andy singing the main vocals and the backing vocals. Agreed, it does sound very much like Andy double tracking or slight possibly of Rossi tracking Andy. Rossi the master of the double tracking vocal. Andy's favourite times had been with Pink Floyd so he has that prog side to him even with his catchy choruses such as this 'Calling The Shots' and 'Another Shipwreck' there are prog elements in the musical themes in both. Just for comparison reasons

Agree, this is not a drum machine. But I don't think it's John either, not his style. Can it be Francis playing? I always assumed it was Pete. And it never seemed odd to me to the point of thinking it was possible not to be him. Of course, the drum sound doesn't really mean anything. The fills and the outro always sounded like Pete to me. The Rockers Rollin' compilation liner notes give it the same copyright as the recordings from the Never Too late album - (c) Mercury Records 1981. So it looks like it was recorded back then, although that's obviously not definitive proof. But it is, shall we say, suggestive Now this is weird. Or better, as you put it, suggestive. Maybe it's the habit, but it sounds much more Pete than John. Could be Francis, as Viza mentioned. The whole track sounds more 1982 than 1981. Especially because they only acknowledge Andy as a member of the band in 1982 (correct?). This song could be, like, the band showing that Andy is now a member, even allowing him to sing. But doesn't sound like a Quo song, no. Maybe they considered this direction at some point, more synth-oriented (I know what some of you will say, so I'll go ahead and say "even more synth-oriented" than what they did post 1982/1986). When Ain't Complaining was in the works, Francis wanted everyone to contribute to the album and songwriting, resulting in even crediting Jeff Rich. So why not doing the same in 1982, to introduce Andy as a member?

There's no valid proof of it having been done during either the NTL or 1982 sessions

I agree that the song sounds more '82 than '81, although I always felt that Never Too Late had those up front synth leanings in places; Mountain Lady being a half decent example. Like Quoincidence says, the date might just be a retrospective error. The only reference to 1981 I can find is in the Rockers Rollin' blurb. But that's the only clue I can find anywhere other than the date of it's official release. There's nothing in the Tim Turan remaster or the deluxe edition of 1+9+8+2. Not that it matters. Just an interesting discussion point.

The Tim Turan remaster says all tracks ℗ 1982 except the live tracks; including Calling The Shots in 1982, then. The live tracks are actually credited as out-takes from Live At NEC, ℗ 2001, meaning they are the same versions released in the Rocker's Rollin' boxset, implying those are different versions from the Live At NEC album. They sound different to me, but I think it's only mastering differences.

Surrey Sound Studios mainly known for the association with 'The Police'. Though I believe Andy Bown appears on keyboards on Wishbone Ash's 'Raw To The Bone' album, recorded at Surrey Sound.

Yeah, Andy Bown is listed amongst 'additional personnel'. Looks like it was recorded in 1985 when, basically, Quo were no more for a while. I've got a few Wishbone Ash albums from across the years (mainly newer ones it has to be said) but I'm unfamiliar with Raw To The Bone. Must have a listen.

Yeah, I saw that when I was grabbing Andy Bown solo stuff which cropped up recently. I know nothing about it. Not even how it sounds, although that's easy done I guess.
