Did this came out as a single? Also, is there a promo clip out there, if so?

Yep, it did come out as a single. B-side was Lonely Night. Whether there is a promo clip I don't know

No promo was made for Break The Rules. Or certainly not one that I've ever seen. I can't even recall them performing the song on Top of the Pops. It might have got an airing during the credits at the end. That vaguely rings a bell but that was the Neolithic age and my memory ain't what it was The first promo they made after becoming successful in the early 70's was Down Down. There are no promos for Paper Plane, Caroline or Break The Rules, although we have the luxury of TV appearances for the first two.

Down here on the Essex Riveria, the 'B'side lonely night was more popular on the jukeboxes in the pubs. Going back to the question, I can't remember any promo or TOTP's appearances and I was even more surprised that the single that was currently in the top 10 UK singles chart wasn't performed live when I went to see them at the Empire Pool Wembley in May '74.

Odd that it is the only single quo have done which didn’t get some kind of promotional performance even if mimed on some kind of pop show. I imagine the band were busy touring at the time and didn’t have the time to promote it that way? Down Down nearly suffered the same fate but they managed to film a quick promo for top of the pops as that particular song topped the charts unexpectedly. Break the rules didn’t even get played in full until about 2003 and various interviews state that the band weren’t happy about it being released as wanted Backwater instead.

Francis has always said he found it difficult to replicate the guitar solo, because of the way it was recorded I think, although I'm no technical expert. And if you listen to the bootleg from the Riffs tour (the Croydon gig I think) you can see why they didn't persist with it. He did struggle a bit. I've always really liked the song. It tends to get overlooked, probably because it's so rarely been played live and there's no promo for it or TV footage from the time to stick on a video or DVD compilation. It was a bit of a change of style from the two previous singles. And Lonely Night is pretty much a country song but it never gets panned, only praised. Very fickle we Quo fans

I don't remember it getting much air play at all. The first Quo song I ever heard, in May 1974, on Radio 1's Top 30 show, Sunday evenings, I think. Certainly stood out in the mix of pop and glam songs at the time.

Not one that I play very often, it always seemed to be lacking some 'bollocks' for want of a better word. I too prefer Lonely Night as it has a bit of a wall of sound vibe that I like.
