It’s ok as a b side but not album material for me. The Mick Green version is better although I am not sure if this version was much more than a demo listening to it again.

Alan L had been trying out a few different musical ideas in those late 70s. Where 'Your Kind of Love' is a bit middle of the road and 'Gonna Teach You To Love Me' starts to drag on a bit aimlessly (both tracks are partially saved by the lead guitar solos), then 'Stones' is Alan getting a bit complicated in the studio...'Hard Ride' grabs the attention, has urgency, well structured and though it has album or B side written all over it, there are the excellent commercial hooks.
The shuffles were not really Alan territory in terms of writing, bar a few tracks and he tried to push the musical envelope, but with very mixed results. A few more tracks of the strength of 'Hard Ride would have been welcome. Not being overtly macho as that didn't really suit Quo completely but having a robust sound and a concise weighty delivery.

Alan’s best work came out him collaborating with other people whether it was Rick or people outside of the band like Mick Green or Keith Lamb etc. Like Rick he never really had a stable songwriting partner in Quo like Francis did with Bob or Bernie. It’s odd he hardly wrote much with Rick again after the “Quo” album as that brought in some very strong material. Maybe due to Alan relocating to Australia in the mid 70s had something to do with it?

Aye, a shame Alan & Rick didn't write together more. I believe they co-wrote 9 songs - 5 of them on Quo, but nothing after that album
