Who thought it was a good idea to put the little bit of dialogue at the start of the track? It's pointless being there, and spoils that remaster for me, I could understand it if the whole CD was different mixes but not when it's the standard mix with that tagged on.

That bit of Bernie Frost singing "I've got tears in my ears from lying on my back and crying over you" has just always been snipped. As far as I know, it's present on the multitracks too

Not a clue what source Andy Pearce used for his remastering

All versions except the Tim Turan seem to come from the same tapes. The Tim Turan masters seem to use something closer to the master. Probably one of those "DO NOT USE" masters (or the master tapes). The other versions seem to have a layer of compression applied to them that was common on vinyl production tapes. Just a guess on my part, but there's definitely something different between the Tim Turan's and all of the other versions.

Tim mastered stuff for me many years ago and when I attended that session we discussed his Quo remasters. He left bits of dialogue on the remasters because he thought Quo fans would find it interesting, much as John Eden did with the remix and remaster of RAOTW, though John got even earlier generations of the tracks than Tim or Andy Pearce did.
Tim is a big Quo fan and did what he thought others would like.
He gets some flak for his remastering but he remastered in the style that was common in 2006. Personally, they are my favourite versions of Quo's catalogue. I find Andy Pearce's a little sterile. But that's personal taste and not meant to be insulting to anyone.

But that's personal taste and not meant to be insulting to anyone. A shame they are so loud and with some V sounding EQ i most cases. I really think his transfers are the best we have in the digital realm. If he mastered in the digital realm (which I suspect) by transferring the audio from analog tapes to digital without any changes, then there's the possibility to release those master transfers as is. That would be dreamy. Andy Pearce's transfers have dropouts and clicks. And so do the old twofer CDs, a couple other old CDs and, especially, the SHM CDs mastered in Japan (lots of dropouts on these). But I must admit I never listened fully to the Tim Turan remasters.
