Only the 4th gig I had ever been to. Bet I wore flares And reeked of a heady combination of patchouli oil and Brut 33.

I am surprised how much his death has affected me but could be partly cos I saw him play only 7+ months ago.
Found this his clip of the opening at the Albert Hall gig from the night before I went. Great view and he’s clearly on good form.

Oh no! He was a good age but still performing. A real favourite of mine and a very innovative guitar player. He hated that song RIP, Mr Beck. Another true legend gone That's as maybe, but I remember in the 70s that always got people up on the dance floor, boogieing away.

I thought of you vivfromcov, as soon as I saw the news. There's a beautiful tribute to him from Imelda May who was the support act, when we saw him in 2017.

Another true legend gone That's as maybe, but I remember in the 70s that always got people up on the dance floor, boogieing away. Jeff Beck likened it to having a pink toilet seat round his neck the rest of his days and has always said that Mickie Most persuaded him to record it. He could never remember how or why. I dare say the royalties kept coming in though. I don't mind it personally and the general riff reminds me of Ice In The Sun a bit.

Back in the Seventies Radio One did a series called the history of Rock 'n' Roll. One of the episodes was the guitarists. They highlighted Hendrix by playing Hey Joe, Clapton playing Crossroads and Jeff Beck playing this, a ground breaking moment in popular music.
"The song features Jeff Beck's musical use of feedback, which he learned to control by finding the guitar's resonant points and bending the strings. Music writers have called his work groundbreaking and cited its influence on Paul McCartney and Jimi Hendrix"

I always wondered why he did that, but even in my dim youth I suspected it was something to do with hits, fans, sales, royalties etc. But as pressbutton says, it got people on the dance floor for years, got to respect that. And note John Lennon only got a bog standard black toilet seat IIRR, Jeff got a (notional) PINK one. Bands should respect their novelty hits. I always regretted that Tin Machine never did The Laughing Gnome. That could have been as big as the Barron Knights' smurfs!

I re-watched the superb documentary made about his life Still on the Run in 2017 (released later on dvd in 2018) and he said that his producer Mickie Most was keen that he sang a single. He didn't write the track and really didn't want to sing it either.
Looking at his cv, he was a briefly solo artist when he recorded it. He'd left the Yardbirds and hadn't formed The Jeff Beck Group. So Most thought he'd only make it as a solo artist if he sang as well. So he was forced into it.
He was quite sweet about it all those decades later and accepted that it made a lot of people happy.

It's been a month since Jeff Beck left us and I'm still playing his music daily. I'm quite surprised by my reaction to his passing. I only really got into his music in 2017 after I saw him live again. And then again last year. I'm really enjoying the music though.

That sad irony - as you all know, I went to see Jeff Beck play at the Albert Hall last year and there were plenty of empty seats.
Yesterday, the tribute concert tickets went on sale, same venue, for Priority booking only and already, its sold out.
That's okay. I'm sure it will be moving but no-one alive plays like Jeff did. So it wouldn't be the same. So glad I saw him again last year.

I'm never sure about these tribute things. Various luminaries pitching up to do their little bit.
I get the concept and can see the attraction. I just find them usually a bit dull when I stumble across one on telly. I think the only one I've half enjoyed has been the Freddie Mercury one.
It'd be interesting to test my views if there was a Quo tribute further down the line. But they do tend to be for individuals rather than bands.
