Former Hawkwind frontman/saxophonist/vocalist Nik Turner has passed away at the age of 82. Nik enjoyed a wildly varied musical career from Hawkwind's space rock to wild and crazy psychedelic punk with Inner City Unit and hot rockin' jazz and R&B with his Fantastic All-Stars before returning to his spacey roots in recent years for a series of acclaimed solo albums. Quo supported the Hawks a time or two in the early '70s and in turn Hawkwind were special guests at Quo's Cardiff Castle gig in 1976. They also shared the bill at Donington in 1982. Around 1980/1, Nik was backstage at a Motörhead gig where he met Rick Parfitt. Rick didn't recognise him (Nik looked very different by then) and asked him what he did. On hearing who he'd played with, Rick said 'I know Hawkwind! One of their songs made a big impression on me. It was called 'You Shouldn't Do That'.' The song is a LONG metronomic thing with a driving rhythm so it would make sense! RIP Nik

Another one gone I could never call myself a Hawkwind fan other than owning the odd single (and, no, not the obvious one ) but Nik Turner was obviously a real character and an experimenter. RIP, Mr T.

That is sad to hear (though it's good that he made a good age). He wrote at least 30 percent of Master of the Universe, possibly more. If he had done nothing else in his lifetime, that would be enough to assure his rock n roll immortality. We saw him perform it once by himself with nothing but the support of a bass player, a chair and his saxophone. At the Rainbow, I think. RIP Nick.
