A close 2nd behind Tommy as Quo's worst song, imo. Makes me cringe whenever I hear it.

Yeah, but at least they didn't film a promo video for either version of Tommy... whereas they did for Little White Lies. It was never edited together, and remains unreleased.

The La's 'There She Goes' by a different name?!
That song actually received plaudits from a few respected musos at the time, it was in keeping with the fresh faces and sound of the times. Though Quo's 'Little White Lies' seemed 10 years too late in a way.

It’s a lovely song and certainly commercial. If it had been released 10 years earlier it probably would have been a hit. If someone like Bryan Adams had done it in the halfway house pop/rock style it more than likely would have done well..

I absolutely love it! Nothing to do with Quo, it's just a great song. Love the subject matter (not least the hypocrisy of Rick writing a song on that subject ). Lovely song

Rick once said it was the best thing he'd ever written and Francis loves it as well.
I'm largely on the fence with it. I don't mind it. It has a nice melody and, personally, I think the whole album was very well produced. Great sound on it enhanced a little by the remaster. The bass work is excellent as are the harmonies.
But it's not a song I'd turn to that regularly. In fact, I probably only hear it if I stick the album on and listen all the way through. But comparing it to songs like Tommy is, for me, quite far wide of the mark. Of course, as usual, it's all down to personal taste.
And while we're on the subject, I've found a clip for the song being performed on TV (Lorraine Kelly or some such). Anyone know who the drummer is here? It isn't Jeff and doesn't look like Matt, although the visual quality isn't great.

Is it Andrew Carmen or Dave Salt on drums ?
I love LWL- the chorus harmonies are great, I love the bridge, it’s a neat little lead solo from Francis and it’s a good little outro

Thanks for this thread. I don't know that album particularly well and never heard this track until today. I really enjoyed it. And as with TCTTC - I imagine it would have been a pop hit if not recorded by Quo. Fretbuzzz - yes, it is a bit like There She Goes on the chorus. That was from 1988! I hadn't realised it was so old. And I can see why LWL was respected by musicians at the time. Rick clearly had a talent for ballads and melody. I think I've heard Tommy once and never again. Here's the official remix of LWL for anyone whose not heard it before.

Had this been a bigger hit, it might have made the set. I always though Twenty Wild Horses was a wee bit predictable for a Quo set. Jig and all that. This might be sacrilege to some , but I prefer it to the brutalised single version of Living On An Island.

The song is just credited to Rick which probably was the first time since the 70s he had a solo writing credit on album. Always preferred his kind of singing in this vein than the hard rock voice.

A bit of a rougher edge, slightly gravelly vocal, yes, would work better I think.

I love it, personally. However, Rick saying it's the best he had written, up to that point, is utter bull The same guy, who always said at every album launch, "Oh it's the best thing we've ever done" Showbiz, innit...
