I have a fondness for John for many reasons. He was the first to be pushed out of the band. And when I went to the Hello Quo premiere in 2012, after the gig, he and Gillie were very warm when I chatted to them. I'd been out of Quo fandom for years and I was swept up in nostalgia
after the film and bounced up to John afterwards. And I really enjoyed his Audience with JC and meeting him afterwards in 2017
I've seen his band play with different line-ups 4x since. And last Friday was my 5th and final gig. They vary depending on the line-up. My favourite ones were in 2016.
Overall, I enjoyed the night for a variety of reasons. It was great to be amongst Quo fans who love the music as much as I do. I'll admit that when they played certain tracks I love most, memories of seeing the original four played simultaneously through my mind. Not to compare negatively but because that is what I see when I hear their music.
The set list was very good. We had some old familiar numbers at the start which John played. All pre-80. And then we moved to a semi-acoustic set where John came to the centre stage and played the bongos. I couldn't see much but that was my favourite part of the gig. I though their current lead guitarist played his best music too. It was similar to Aquostic but without an accordion. And Rick Chase's wife joined on vocals and she's got a lovely voice. Then John took a break for the hard rockier Quo numbers. And he returned for one plus the encore of RAOTW. Rick C did a good job as compare/announcing various tracks and I enjoy his singing voice too.
What I thought as I watched the band play was the huge sense of enjoyment they get from playing Quo songs. Sadly, I didn't get goosebumps but that didn't matter.
There was real warmth that night. Lovely to see Bob Young in the audience. He enjoyed talking to fans afterwards, as did John.
I wish John all the best with any other ventures. I would be up for seeing any jazz he might play. Thanks for all the wonderful music.
